Most boats on the water today are powerboats. Even most sailboats carry
inboard or outboard motors.
Good thing, too, or a lot of people wouldn’t be boating—oars don’t do the job
when it comes to heading 20 miles offshore, and even experienced sailors need
a little power backup sometimes. Sailing is an art not learned quickly or casually,
and the engine on a sailboat can be very important for the neophyte.
Several forms of unpowered boating such as kayaking, windsurfing, and outrigger
canoeing have experienced periods of very rapid growth in recent years.
But for now, the dominant forms of recreational boating involve power.
