Most boats on the water today are powerboats. Even most sailboats carry<br />

inboard or outboard motors.<br />

Good thing, too, or a lot of people wouldn’t be boating—oars don’t do the job<br />

when it comes to heading 20 miles offshore, <strong>and</strong> even experienced sailors need<br />

a little power backup sometimes. <strong>Sailing</strong> is an art not learned quickly or casually,<br />

<strong>and</strong> the engine on a sailboat can be very important for the neophyte.<br />

Several forms of unpowered boating such as kayaking, windsurfing, <strong>and</strong> outrigger<br />

canoeing have experienced periods of very rapid growth in recent years.<br />

But for now, the dominant forms of recreational boating involve power.
