trimaran A boat with three hulls.<br />

trip line A line attached to the lower part of an anchor so that it can be easily pulled<br />

free of bottom.<br />

true wind The actual direction <strong>and</strong> force of the wind, as compared to “apparent wind”<br />

felt aboard a moving boat.<br />

underway When a vessel is in motion, not at anchor.<br />

upwind Toward the direction from which the wind is blowing.<br />

v-bottom A hull with a sharp or v-shaped bottom, designed to split the waves <strong>and</strong><br />

soften the ride. Also spelled “vee-bottom.”<br />

variation Compass error caused by the difference between geographic north <strong>and</strong> the<br />

magnetic north pole.<br />

ventilate To pump fumes out of the bilge via an electric blower. Also, when a prop<br />

draws in air <strong>and</strong> loses its grip in the water.<br />

VHF radio Very High Frequency radio, the most common boat-to-boat <strong>and</strong> boat-toshore<br />

communication system on recreational boats.<br />

wake The waves created by boat movement.<br />

walk-through A passageway through the windshield via a folding section, most often<br />

found on bow-rider powerboats.<br />

waterline The line where the surface of the water meets the sides of the boat, sometimes<br />

marked with a trim strip.<br />

weather shore A shore lying upwind.<br />

whipping Securing the loose ends of a cut str<strong>and</strong> of line with cord. Sometimes applied<br />

to securing the ends with heat, tape, or glue.<br />

winch A circular drum used to provide a mechanical advantage when hauling in line or<br />

cable.<br />

windward Toward the direction from which the wind is blowing.<br />

yawl A two-masted sailboat with a forward main mast <strong>and</strong> a smaller aft mast stepped<br />

behind the rudder post.
