spinnaker A three-cornered, parachute-like sail, usually brightly colored, for sailing<br />

downwind.<br />

splice To permanently join two ropes by tucking str<strong>and</strong>s of each over the other, creating<br />

a smoother joint than any knot.<br />

spring line Lines used to control fore <strong>and</strong> aft motion of a boat tied up in a slip.<br />

spring tides Periods around the new <strong>and</strong> full moons when high tides are higher than<br />

usual <strong>and</strong> low tides are lower than usual.<br />

squall A sudden storm accompanied by strong winds.<br />

st<strong>and</strong>ing line The main part of a line, the part not used in a knot.<br />

starboard The right side, facing forward on a boat.<br />

starboard tack When a sailboat has the wind coming over the starboard side.<br />

stays Wire rigging used to support the mast fore <strong>and</strong> aft.<br />

stepped Secured to the deck or keel, used in referring to sailboat masts.<br />

stern The rear part of a boat.<br />

stern drive Same as inboard/outboard or I/O.<br />

stern line A line from the stern cleat to the dock.<br />

stow To put an item in a secure spot.<br />

swamp When a boat fills with water over the gunnels, often prior to sinking.<br />

tack The legs of an upwind beat in sailing. Also, the forward lower corner of a sail.<br />

Changing the heading of a sailing vessel so that the wind comes over the oppo-<br />

tackle Pulleys <strong>and</strong> lines used to gain mechanical advantage. Also used to describe<br />

anchor gear <strong>and</strong> fishing gear.<br />

telltale A wind indicator mounted on sail or stay.<br />

thwart A brace running laterally across a boat.<br />

tides The vertical rise <strong>and</strong> fall of sea water caused by the pull of the sun <strong>and</strong> moon.<br />

tiller An arm or lever for steering.<br />

transom The squared-off section of the stern.<br />

trim To adjust the running attitude of a powerboat through moving the drives up or<br />

down or adjusting trim tabs. Also, to adjust sails for most effective sailing.
