Radio Direction Finder Also known as RDF, this is a radio with an antenna that can<br />

be tuned to locate the geographic position of distant stations <strong>and</strong> thus to locate a vessel’s<br />

position.<br />

reach <strong>Sailing</strong> across the wind.<br />

right of way The boat with the legal right to continue course <strong>and</strong> speed in meeting situations.<br />

The other boat is said to be the “burdened” vessel.<br />

rode The anchor line <strong>and</strong> chain.<br />

rudder A vertical plate near the stern for steering a boat.<br />

A U-shaped metal fitting used to bind together anchor <strong>and</strong> rode or sail <strong>and</strong><br />

shear pin A soft metal pin designed to break when the prop hits an obstruction, thus<br />

preventing damage to prop or gears.<br />

sheet A line used to adjust sail trim.<br />

shipshape In clean, orderly condition.<br />

shrouds Fixed rigging that supports the mast from the sides of the boat.<br />

slip A berth for a boat with pilings <strong>and</strong> finger piers on both sides.<br />

sloop A sailboat with a single mast set slightly forward of amidships, usually equipped<br />

with a mainsail <strong>and</strong> a jib.<br />

spars The masts <strong>and</strong> booms of a sailboat.
