ketch A two-masted sailboat with the foremast taller than the aft mast, <strong>and</strong> the aft mast<br />

stepped ahead of the rudder post.<br />

knot One nautical mile per hour, equal to 1.15 miles per hour.<br />

latitude A measure of geographic distance north or south of the equator. Latitude lines<br />

on a chart run east <strong>and</strong> west.<br />

lee shore A shore lying downwind.<br />

leeward Away from the wind.<br />

line Rope or cord used aboard a boat.<br />

longitude A measure of geographic distance east or west of the prime meridian which<br />

runs through Greenwich, Engl<strong>and</strong>. Longitude lines on a chart run north <strong>and</strong> south.<br />

lubber’s line<br />

direction.<br />

The line on a compass in line with the boat’s keel, indicating the boat’s<br />

luff The leading edge of a sail. When a sail flaps because it’s improperly trimmed, it’s<br />

said to be luffing.<br />

mainsail The sail on the back side of the main mast.<br />

mast An upright spar to support rigging <strong>and</strong> sails.<br />

mizzen A smaller mast set aft of the main mast.<br />

mooring A permanent anchor attached to a buoy, allowing tie-ups without dropping the<br />

boat’s anchor.<br />

nautical mile One minute of latitude, or 6,076 feet.<br />

neap tides The quarter-moon periods when tide movement is minimal.<br />

outboard An engine <strong>and</strong> drive system that attaches to a boat’s transom.<br />

painter A line attached to the bow, usually of a dinghy.<br />

piling A support post for a pier.<br />

piloting Navigation by use of visible references.<br />

planing hull<br />

speed.<br />

A hull designed to lift to near the surface, decreasing drag <strong>and</strong> increasing<br />

port The left side, facing forward on a boat. Also, a harbor.<br />

port tack When a sailing vessel has the wind coming over the port side.<br />

prop Short for “propeller,” used to push a boat through the water via mechanical power.
