Part 7: Sailing, Sailing …
Sailing to the Dock
The major difference between sailboats and powerboats in docking is that in sailing, you
have no real brakes except the wind. With a powerboat, reversing the propeller can bring
most boats to a halt in less than a boatlength, but sailboats
keep going for some distance after the sails are
Look Out!
doused or lowered or the boat headed up into the wind.
A large sailboat coming
to the docks has a lot of momentum,
and it can’t be stopped by
the casual push of a foot. Keep
feet and hands out of the space
between the rail and the pilings,
or injuries can result.
Boat Bytes
Remember, just because
you know what you need
to do in a particular
maneuver does not mean
your crew knows. Explain
exactly what you want each person
to do before you enter a
crowded docking situation or try
to anchor in a tight harbor.
Docking with the wind to
the dock.
The trick in coming to a dock is to plan your landing so
that you turn up into the wind at the last moment. This
allows the momentum of your turn to push you sideways
close enough to toss a line ashore or hook onto something
with a boat hook, or to have a crew member step
onto the dock and secure the bow line. The person
should be at the bow ready to step on the dock with the
bow line the instant the boat is within safe distance.
With any amount of wind or current, the boat won’t
stay in position long, so the crew will need to look lively.
Depending on the wind, you may come to a dock in a
number of different ways and you may have to dock on
a particular end of the structure, whether you want to or
not, because of conditions or available space. You can
then walk the boat to where you’ll tie it up while you
have lunch or stay overnight.
Three typical situations are shown in the following
figures.
