Chapter 24: Types of Sailboats
Lateen sails are spread by two spars, a lower boom that extends past the mast and a second
that runs at an angle from the forward end of the boom to the top of the mast. It’s the
rig for some popular “board boats” such as the Sunfish.
class boats sport a lateen sail.
Gaff rigs are still seen on classic catboats here and there along the east coast—they
include a spar or “gaff” extending out along the sail’s upper edge from about two-thirds of
the way up the mast.
One of the most thorough and interesting books on sail design, function, use, and care is
Sails by Jeremy Howard-Williams ( J. de Graff, 1983). It’s been through umpteen editions
since the first in 1967, but it’s still the definitive work for those who really want to get the
best from sail-power.
Sail Care
Whatever the type of sail, it should be folded neatly at day’s end. The accordion fold is
most common, starting at the foot and working toward the head. Storing a sail via the
accordion fold is called flaking and is designed to keep the sail neat without bending the
fibers excessively.
Fold the sail over on itself several times or roll it up and store it in the bag it came in.
Sails should be stowed out of the weather and kept away from excessive heat. Store them
in an air-conditioned building when possible to assure long life.
