ever learn the names of all the types of rigging, hulls, and the categories of sails.
Plenty of very happy and very good sailors never do.
But as your experience grows, it’s likely that you’ll want to be able to converse
with others who do know these terms, so this chapter presents a brief review.
What Do You Call It?
Sailboats are generally classified according to the number and position of the
masts. The size doesn’t matter in this case, simply the way the mast or masts are
put on the boat, and it’s possible for a catboat to become a sloop if someone goes
to the trouble and expense of changing the position and rigging of the mast.
