Tilt up the lower unit and remove any obstructions, and you should be good to go. (If there’s mud in the intake, you can clean it out with stiff leader wire.) It’s also possible, on outboards and stern drives, that you have the lower unit—the part that sticks down into the water—tilted up too high, as you might when crossing a shallow area. If the water intake comes above the surface, the motor will get hot. The third possible cause of overheating is a bad water pump—not a fun repair on most engines. See your owner’s manual and break out the wrenches, or have the water pump repaired by a professional. (It’s a good idea to carry a spare water pump impeller, just in case.) It Runs but It Doesn’t Move If the motor runs fine until you shift it into gear, and then it dies, you could be looking at some major surgery, as in broken shafts, gears, or other parts. But more often, it’s a rope, wire crab trap, or other obstruction wrapped around the propeller. The solution is to tilt up the lower unit on outboards and stern drives and work on the offending tangle with a knife, pliers, or wire cutters. On inboards, you have to put on your dive mask to get at the source—no fun at all in winter! It’s also possible that the shaft is turning but the propeller is not—indicating a broken cotter pin in small motors, a spun rubber impact hub in the prop on larger outboards and stern drives. To replace a cotter pin, remove the propeller, tap out the old pin, and then insert the new one. You can also use a stout nail cut to size if you don’t carry a spare pin. If the prop has a spun hub, you can’t fix it yourself. However, most propellers will operate at idle speed, allowing you to get back to the dock. (If you speed up, the load is too much for the minimal friction in the hub and the prop won’t turn.) Carrying a spare prop is the best way to deal with a spun hub. With portable outboards—3 to 15 horses—it’s a good idea to put them on the transom while the boat is still on the trailer. That way, there’s no danger of dropping them overboard, and it’s also much easier on your back. If your boat is stored in the water and you take the kicker home for safe keeping, you have to reinstall it while the boat is afloat. Have a helper give you a hand, or attach a short, stout safety cord to the motor and then to a cleat on the boat, so that the motor can’t fall into the water if you loose your grip. 305 Boat Bytes All outboards have a “telltale” spout on the cowl that squirts a thin stream of water out to the side when the cooling system has proper pressure. Check this spray regularly, particularly when you pass through weeds, to head off overheating problems.
