Chapter 20: The Well-Equipped Nautical Toolbox
◆ Spare spark plugs. Make sure they’re the same type used by the manufacturer.
◆ A spark plug wrench, including a soft insert to protect the ceramic insulator.
◆ On motors to 75 horses, a starter rope. Some larger motors can be pull-started, but
only by rather burly mechanics. The starter rope is your insurance against a dead
battery.
◆ On portable motors, a spare shear pin for the propeller.
◆ A spare propeller, prop nut, washer, and cotter pin.
◆ A wrench to fit the prop nut.
Inboard Supplies
Four-stroke outboards as well as nearly all
inboards and I/Os, both gasoline and diesel, get
their oil from inside the oil pan attached to the
bottom of the engine and burn very little of it
with their fuel. Consequently, you don’t have to
add oil as often—although a marine diesel will
very likely want a small sip every morning, gasoline
inboards are likely not to need a refill for
weeks at a time.
Some outboards make it easy
to add oil to the injection system
with a tank under the
cowl. Others require a funnel
and an exploration of the
bilge.
Funnels used for oil create
a sticky mess if not stowed
properly. Wipe out the funnel
with paper towels and
stow it inside a gallonsized
plastic bag with an airtight
locking seal to keep things
clean.
