You may go through your entire boating life without ever facing a single emergency
worthy of the name. Most casual skippers do—boating is not a dangerous
sport compared to many. And sometimes an “emergency” is in the eye of the
beholder. Is running aground an emergency? Sort of, if the tide is going out, the
sun is going down, and the mosquitoes are coming in.
On the other hand, some boaters take an unplanned visit to a bar in stride and
have an oyster roast on the shells while they wait for the water to come back up.
