The Complete Idiot’s Guide to Boating and Sailing, Second Edition
Thanks to Marty Luray, who got me started in writing about boating when he bought my
first story for Rudder more than 25 years ago. Thanks to Chris Caswell, who was my boss
at Sea magazine for several great years; and to Harry Monahan, managing editor at Sea,
who taught me lots of boating terminology, some of it printable in a family publication.
(Harry, I finally learned to spell “accommodation”—two c’s and two m’s, right?)
Thanks to Tom McEwen, who hired me at the Tampa Tribune, and who has been a guide
and mentor to me and so many other sports writers for so many years.
Thanks to John Owens, Richard Stepler, and Randy Steele, my editors at Boating magazine
over the last decade; and to features editors Jeanne Craig and David Seidman, who
buried me with assignments; and to associate editor Lenny Rudow, who keeps me busy
these days.
Thanks to Colin Moore, who so ably edits my boating columns for Outdoor Life magazine—but
who inevitably outfishes me. Thanks to Larry Larsen of Larsen Outdoors
Publishing, who convinced me to get into the book business for the first time almost a
decade ago, and has now published 10 of my books.
Thanks to Steve Hargis, producer at Outdoor World, who took a chance with an untested
script writer, and wound up creating a team that won a basketful of awards in the TNN
years.
Thanks to Dan Atwood at Pro-Line Boats, who put me up for the NMMA Award and be
damned if we didn’t win it.
At Trailer Boats, for which I used to do a great deal of work, thanks to former editor
Randy Scott, managing editor Mike Blake, and the new editor-in-chief and my sometimes
fishing buddy Jim Hendricks.
Thanks to Earl Bentz, former president of OMC Boat Group and now CEO of Triton,
who backed two of my early boating books and has offered lots of encouragement. Thanks
to Alex Leva of OMC/Hydra-Sports for countless assistances and advice. Thanks to the
staff at Brunswick’s Mercaibo Test Center for years of education. Thanks to Walker
Agency and Yamaha, Bear Agency, and particularly tech wizard Dave Greenwood of
Suzuki, and all the other boat and motor companies who have been so helpful on so many
stories. BOAT U.S. was helpful in providing price data and other useful material from
their excellent catalog, and Steve Colgate of the Offshore Sailing School got me interested
in sailing for the first time more than 25 years ago.
Thanks to all the skippers and guides who have taken me under their wing all these years,
glossed over my errors, and corrected my perceptions with their experience and good
humor.
