Chapter 12: Rules of the Marine Road We’ve already touched on the use of red and green lights on navigation markers. Some marker lights blink out a little code so that they can be positively identified at a distance. Their code is indicated on the navigation charts for the area. For example, if you are entering a harbor and see a green light give three short flashes, you can be sure that’s the outside marker or marker number 1, and not green marker number 3, which is identified by three long flashes, and which may be separated from open water by a dangerous sandbar. Boats also have lights for night operation so that they can be seen by the skippers of approaching boats. In small boats it’s common for the forward running light to be a single light on the bow, with a red lens on the port or left side and a green lens on the starboard or right side. On larger boats, there are usually two separate lights, red on the port bow quarter, green on the starboard bow quarter. These lights can only be seen by boats from dead ahead to 112.5 degrees on either side. The aft light on most open powerboats less than 12 meters (about 40 feet) long is a white light visible from 360 degrees. The most common aft light on cabin vessels and larger recreational boats is a white light visible from 135 degrees astern only. Boat Bytes If you see a red light and a white light on an approaching boat, it’s going to pass port side to. Green plus white, it’s going to starboard. Red and green at once, it’s headed right at you—change course! (On boats without a masthead light or a 360-degree stern light you will see only the red on boats passing to port, only green on boats passing to starboard, and only red and green as it approaches head-on.) Boats longer than 12 meters must also carry a masthead light forward of the stern light, and it must be at least 2.5 meters (8.2 feet) above the gunnels. The masthead light is visible only in an arc of 225 degrees ahead of the boat. Sailboats also display the bow and stern lights described above when underway, and alternatively may display masthead lights that include both the red/green lights visible only from ahead and the white light visible only from astern. Sailboats can also put a red light above a green light on their mast. All small boats at anchor are supposed to display a single 360-degree white light. This may be the stern light in outboard boats or a masthead light in cabin boats and sailboats. (The “mast” on a powerboat with a cabin is a short staff, usually no more than a yard long, that supports the light.) A few words to the wise when boating after dark: Red light doesn’t wipe out night vision like white light, so it’s wise to have instruments lighted dimly in red. And if you must use a 181
182 Part 3: Getting from Point A to Point B: Marine Navigation white spotlight to find an unlighted marker, avoid looking at the beam—have the lighthandler stand well ahead of the skipper if possible. Be sure you never shine a spotlight directly at the skipper of another vessel underway. You’ll temporarily blind him, and there’s actually a rule against doing so, making you liable should he run aground or into another boat shortly after. The Least You Need to Know ◆ Navigational markers convey information by their color, shape, number, sounds, and lights. ◆ Horn signals are useful in keeping clear of other boats. ◆ The “right of way” gives boats approaching from starboard the right to pass ahead of you. ◆ Sailboats, boats powered by oars or paddles, and ships always have the right of way over recreational powerboats. ◆ Boating at night can be safe and pleasant, provided you take the proper precautions.
