markers in heavily traveled routes such as the Intracoastal Waterway (ICW) will all be
lighted, but those to local harbors may have only the outside marker lighted, and maybe
one or two others at danger points along the route. Always proceed slowly and have the
next marker in view via moon-glow or spotlight before passing into a channel without
lighted marks.
The Intracoastal Waterway (ICW) runs from Boston, Massachusetts, to Brownsville,
Texas, along the length of the Atlantic and Gulf coasts of the United States. It provides
a clearly marked channel with adequate depth to float 100-foot barges as well as the
largest private boats. The waterway often runs inside the barrier islands that are found
along most coastlines, providing an all-weather passage as well as thousands of inviting
places to visit.

The lateral buoyage system
places red, even-numbered,
nun-shaped buoys to the
right or starboard side of a
ship entering a channel and
green, odd-numbered canshaped
buoys to the left or
port of an entering vessel.
The shape of the markers is also informative. The red buoys are frequently conical on
their upper sections, while the green buoys are cylindrical. And on marker posts, the
GPOE symbols are square, the RRRE symbols triangular (see the following figure).
