Part 2: The Basics of Operation
When the Anchor Goes Ashore
A second anchor from the stern keeps the boat from washing sideways when you anchor
near a beach. It also prevents you from having to make a long swim if the wind changes
and starts to blow offshore.
Look Out!
Never ground the boat
on a full or falling tide, because
the water will soon fall out from
under it. This leaves the hull lying
on its side like a beached
whale—and about as easy to lift.
Grounding—On Purpose
Don’t put the stern anchor in the water—the wash of
even a gentle surf will prevent it from holding. Walk it
up on the shore about 30 feet and bury it in the sand.
You can sometimes tie the rode to a tree or rock on
shore.
This approach not only keeps waves and boat wakes out
of the boat, but in tidal areas it ensures that you don’t
come back to a grounded boat as the water flows out
from under it.
On flat-calm rivers and lake beaches, when you’re not going out of sight of the boat, you
can simply ground the boat bow on, which keeps your prop well out in the water and
hopefully not grounded. Put an anchor out from the stern so that the boat doesn’t wash
sideways and ground the prop, and tie a bow line to a tree ashore. On outboards and stern
drives, you may want to tilt up the lower unit.
On a calm shore, it’s possible
to anchor bow to the beach
temporarily. In rougher
water or for a long stay,
anchor bow to the water, and
add a second anchor ashore
from the stern.
