Chapter 8: Anchors Aweigh! Making Your Boat Stay Put
The difference? It’s not the label. The high-tensile model is rated for 500 pounds of holding
power, the standard model just 300 pounds. The high-tensile version is a specially
treated steel that won’t bend under pressure.
Other versions of the fluke-style anchor are available in high-strength aluminum—which
has the advantage of light weight but very good holding power—and stainless steel, which
is a good-looking material, for those who stow their anchors in chocks on deck.
A recent variation of the fluke-style anchor is the C-Claw, which combines bulky bronze
flukes with the typical Danforth type shank. The unique design of this anchor causes it to
dig in fast, even without a chain, which has made it a favorite for anglers fishing shallow
flats where the noise of lowering a chain can spook fish. It’s about $90.
Plow Anchors
The fluke or Danforth
anchor is relatively light in
weight, has excellent holding
power, and takes up little
storage space.
Plow anchors, also called CQR anchors, look exactly like a plow. For those of you who
haven’t been on a John Deere lately, that means they have a sharp, curved spade fluke or
blade attached to a long shaft that runs forward rather than up. When pressure is put on
the shaft, the plow burrows its way down through weeds, mud, or whatever until it finds
solid holding.
Plow anchors have excellent
holding power, plowing
deeper under heavy strain.
They’re a favorite yacht
anchor.
