Handling your boat in and around a marina or boat ramp is not all that difficult.
(Of course, neither is calculus after you learn it—just kidding!) In fact,
after a few months afloat, you’ll find there’s nothing to docking. But first
learning how to handle a boat around a marina or ramp can be a challenge,
not because it’s really difficult or dangerous, but because it’s potentially
embarrassing if you goof. And you can also do some damage to your boat’s gel
coat if you’re really careless.
There are “ramp ghouls” who entertain themselves on Sunday afternoons at
the marina by sitting in lawn chairs, sipping a cold one, and laughing at the
errors of boaters allegedly less skilled than themselves.
The good news is that with a bit of practice, you won’t give them anything to
laugh about.
