Farewell to our Grade 7’s
Our year-end assembly will be held
on Thursday, June 28 at 10:45 am.
This will be our opportunity to
honor our grade 7 students who will
be going on to Brooks next year and
to present awards to students in
grades 4-7who have done really well
this year in academics, effort and
citizenship. All grade 7 parents are
invited to attend and parents of
those students receiving an award
will be invited by phone. We look
forward to seeing you then!
Thank you to KCCSA
We would like to extend our heartfelt gratitude
and thanks to the Association for all
they do for our school. The support of the
Community Association is overwhelming and so
many of the awesome things that happen at
Kelly Creek Community School could not be
accomplished without their dedication and
support. Thanks for helping to make the
2011/2012 school year such a huge success!
Fun Day— Monday, June 25th
Fun Day is on Monday, June
25th! We’re hoping for good
weather and of course, lots
of fun! Thanks to the
KCCSA again for providing a
hot dog, drink and watermelon
for lunch. We’ll be
starting our events in the
morning at about 9:30, having
lunch about 11:30, swimming
from 12:00 – 2:00 and heading
back on the bus or with
“Kids love hands-on learning and
learning to feed yourself is a life
skill.”
Mr. Ervington’s class has been
growing lettuce in recycled gutters
used as growing boxes for
the past few weeks. If everything
goes well, the students may get to
taste their first crop of lettuce in
June, in a class salad.
Did you know that lettuce
was discovered as a weed
growing around the Mediterranean?
The Egyptians
have been eating lettuce
for over 4,500 years.
Library Books - due June 8th
It's hard to imagine,
but we are rounding
the last curve of the
2011-12 school year!
Please be sure to
check with your child
about any library
books that he/she may
have at school or at
home. The library's final
due date for students and
staff is Friday – June
8. We will be conducting a
full inventory and need all
library materials returned
on or before this date. Students
who have overdue
books will receive library
time for bus students may be
a little out on that afternoon
– possibly 10 minutes either
side of the usual time. Please
send extra snacks (if necessary),
bathing suits/towels,
sun screen and clothing appropriate
for whatever the
weather brings on Monday.
We hope you can join us at
Jack Anderson—Solar Cooker—Gr. 4 & 5
Jack Anderson belongs to the
Kyoto Twist Solar Cooking Society,
which combines poverty relief
with carbon footprint mitigation,
by supporting the spread of
solar cooking in developing countries.
Jack, who has years of experience
with alternate fuels, has
helped supply solar cookers to
places, such as, Haiti. He brought
3 types of solar cookers to our
Grade 4/5 class, to demonstrate
the principles of catcher and solar
energy. We were lucky
enough to have a beautiful sunny
day and thus were able to cook
Awards for the Peace Poem were
given out on Thursday, May 31st
at the Max Cameron Theatre.
This year, we had a number of
students who were recognized at
the event. Many of our children
have written poems that will be
published in the annual anthol-
Sailing—Gr. 6 & 7
What an awesome opportunity
for students in the Kelly Creek
Outdoor Adventure Program!
Sixteen students from our grade
six/seven class ventured to the
harbor for a day full of excitement
and learning. The children
were given instructions and lessons
in the art of sailing and
were able to put their newly acquired
skills into motion on
Friday, May 25th!
Destination Conservation Windup
Two members of our Destina-
tion Conservation Team
(Brendan Durant and Kya
Moore) travelled to Henderson
Elementary, accompanied by
Kevin Austin on May 23rd, for
the year end DC windup. The
year end activity is an excel-
lent opportunity for teams to
share their success stories
GrassRoutes Presentation to Gr. 6/7’s
GrassRoutes is a group of students
with a slightly mad plan to
engage youth in protecting the
environment: they are biking
across Canada, presenting to
youth groups from coast to coast,
and raising money to support
youth-led environmental initiatives!
GrassRoutes’ six student cyclists
begin the journey on May 31st,
2012 in Victoria, BC, and will bike
9000km to St John’s, Newfound-
with other teams from across
the District. While our team
was unable to complete their
campaign (reusable sandwich
wrappers for every student and
staff member), they were able
to show off what we do at KCCS
with regards to waste manage-
ment and environmental aware-
ness. The participants returned
land by early September.
GrassRoutes is beginning its
journey with a presentation
tour for seven Powell River
schools, from May 23rd to
25th.
Founded on the idea of cycling
from home on the west coast
to university on the east coast,
the project has grown; Grass-
Routes is organizing workshops
in every Canadian province to
share their stories, distribute
Planning Day—No
School—June 6
June 6th is a day when
school is not in session
for students. The school
meets and looks at data
to plan goals for children’slearning
the following
year.
to the school with the recycled
trophy pictured below!
resources, and develop leadership
skills amongst youth
groups. These workshops aim
to encourage youth to lead
environmental projects in
their communities.
Working with passionate local
changemakers, Grass-
Routes hopes to organize
events in many of the communities
they cross. “We’re
biking to unify people to a
common goal.”
The Grade 4 & 5 students
in Mr. Ervington’s class
participated in the annual
Coast Forest District’s
forest tour. Students
spent the morning on a
guided hike learning about
our forest ecosystems and
the forest industry. Some
interesting facts the students
learned are:
Ms. Brander’s class is learning
about the life cycle of
the butterfly. Within a few
weeks the caterpillars
(larvae) have grown and then
spun their chrysalis (pupa)
and finally emerged as beautiful
butterflies. The
Bike to School/Work
Awesome!
Special thanks to Mr. Shostak and
his amazing student leaders who
worked diligently to provide a week
full of bike activities for all students
at KCCS! Each day, classes
received 30 minutes of instruction/
skill development and bike safety.
On Tuesday, May 29th we welcomed
Constable Venselaar to the school
who provided some bike safety tips
to all students at our assembly.
