WHAT’S NEW WITH MOLE AVON GRASS MIXTURES?
Our proven and established mixtures receive very positive customer feedback year on year.
For this year the range remains unchanged, although the species and varieties included
have again been reviewed and updated. Of particular note is the increased use of Lofa
Festulolium in some of our mixtures.
MA Giant (a high yielding short term mixture), MA Triple Season (a red clover 3 season
Hybrid grass mixture) and MA Rejuvenation (an overseeding/patching mixture) all now
contain Lofa which exhibits high yields, high sugars and great palatability. Festuloliums are
varieties bred by crossing a Fescue with a Ryegrass which can offer very positive gains for
growers.
NEW FOR 2011
All Mole Avon mixtures will include a GroMax seed coating as standard. GroMax is a
biostimulant which will improve root growth and establishment. Biostimulants do not offer
the benefit of added nutrients; they simply assist the seedling’s ability to take advantage of
the soils own inherent reserves of nutrient by stimulating the soils microflora, resulting in
improved root growth and establishment. GroMax is a dry formulation of natural humates
and humic acids, seaweed extract, a proprietary blend of natural sugars (sucrose), vitamins
(B complex & K) soluble potash and buffering agents. The product is compatible with most
micronutrients, fertilisers and pesticides.
DELIVERY
Whilst we prefer to send
our grass seeds by the
most cost effective ‘threeday’
carrier system, if you
order before 12 noon, it
is possible to guarantee
delivery next working day
on MA Grass Seeds.
We continue to support the Herbage Varieties Guide which furthers the
extensive, independent testing of varieties. This is achieved by us making a
small contribution for every bag of grass seed sold.
In certain circumstances, shortages of some varieties may occur. We reserve the right therefore to replace those not available with a
suitable alternative. This information can be confirmed prior to order/delivery or will be shown, where possible, on the bag label.
• To enhance existing swards
without the need for ploughing.
• 10kg pack.
• Includes extremely aggressive, highly
productive tetraploid varieties.
• Hybrids will establish quickly
and provide quality forage.
• Intermediate perennial varieties
will give additional high water
soluble carbohydrate levels.
• Suitable for grazing or cutting.
• Typical seed rate 7-10kg/acre
CLOVER BLENDS
FOR OVERSEEDING
We are also able to supply a range of cutting,
grazing or dual purpose clover blends to order.
• For surface or slot seeding
of swards either to renovate
worn out pastures or to boost
production of existing leys.
• 20kg pack
• Sowing rate is exactly double
that of normal grass seed.
• Available with or without white clover
• Typical seed rate 14-20kg/acre.
The concept of using a seed coating to
enhance plant establishment is not a new
one. However, recent increases in the price
of fertilisers and fuels now make this choice
economically viable as well as agronomically
beneficial. i-Seed has been developed over
the past 10 years as a fertiliser dressing that
is coated onto grass seed.
Grass seeds have little storage for nutrients
and i-seed provides immediate external
N and P to boost seedling development -
better roots and good early establishment
of green phytomass.
• 14% increased leaf growth
16 days after germination.
• 32% better plant density.
• Increases first cut yields by around 10%
and second cut yields by up to 3%.
• Fertilises the seed not the weeds.
• Reduces need for further fertiliser
applications where phosphate and
potash indices are adequate.
• Better ground contact leading to
better germination.
• Heavier seed means more even
application and penetration through
any grass sward present.
• Faster root development allowing leys
to be grazed quicker after sowing and
avoiding any potential weather changes.

EXTRA HIGH CLOVER MIXES
Modern clovers, especially red clovers can be
very aggressive if sown in the spring. If sown too
thick, they can prevent the grass from establishing
successfully. That’s why Oliver Seeds red clover ‘Hi-
Pro’ mixtures contain less clover seed in the spring
(to 1st July) than in the autumn.
SABRE HI-PRO
• Short term ryegrass and red
clover mixture for high protein
forage production.
• Excellent spring and early season
performance producing massive silage
yields.
• Option to use for hay.
BROADSWORD HI-PRO
• Variant of Oliver’s top selling
hybrid mixture with red and
white clover.
• Erect and vigorous grasses to compete
with clover.
• High sugar levels to enhance
fermentation in silage.
• Show stopping yield of high D value and
high protein forage for 3-4 years.
• Increased palatability from grass and
clover for aftermath grazing.
• Impressive drought tolerance and disease
resistance.
CLAYMORE HI-PRO
• 5+ year high clover variant of
Oliver Seeds top performing
conservation mix.
• All varieties selected for top conservation
performance, both for yield and quality.
• Good spring growth with relatively late
heading date.
• Excellent disease resistance and high
sugar levels for improved fermentation.
• Persistent under intensive management
with good hardiness.
• Combination of persistent red clover and
aggressive white clover which develops
as the red clover declines.

broadcast.
• Use slug bait to improve establishment.
• Responds well to N (hence sowing with
clover).
• NPK requirements are similar to a grass
sward.
• Graze when the crop is 150-200mm (6”-
8”) and when the plants have sufficient
root structure to tolerate grazing.
• Graze rotationally for short spells for
best results.
• Graze to avoid flower heads developing
(except once a year in the autumn as this
can aid persistency).
• Do not graze hard, especially in wet
conditions.
• Limit intake in dairy cow rations to 25%
of dry matter intake to avoid milk taint.
WATCH OUT – FLEA BEETLE ABOUT
Over the past few years we have seen many crops devastated overnight by flea beetle
attacks. They defoliate crops shortly after emergence with the usual result of a crop
failure. We therefore advise that you select ‘flea beetle treated’ seed for peace of mind
on crops drilled up to at least the end of July.
* As requirement of product registration, ‘flea beetle treated’ seed may only be drilled and not broadcast.

WINFRED
Sow: April-August
Use: June-December
Sowing Rate: 1½-2½kg/acre broadcast
Pack: 5kg, 10kg and 25kg
Seed Treatment: Undressed or ‘Flea Beetle
Treated’
Its yield is similar or better than stubble
turnips, but due to its continuous leaf
production, retains quality over a longer
period. If grazed at about eight weeks and
back fenced, it can re-grow to produce two
good crops of very palatable forage before
the autumn.
• Perfect for summer grazing.
• A forage of approximately 19% protein in
just 8-10 weeks.
• High seedling vigour gives establishment
reliability.
• High leaf to stem ratio and good disease
resistance gives excellent palatability.
• Bolting resistance produces reliable high
quality summer grazing.
• Proven palatability in grazing trials.
• Better re-growth potential than other
varieties.
• Better winter hardiness than stubble
turnips.
Hybrid Brassicas
SWIFT
Use: June-April
Sowing Rate: 2kg/acre broadcast
Pack: 5kg
Seed Treatment: Undressed or ‘Flea Beetle
Treated’
It is probably most ideally sown after
a harvest of cereals where its winter
hardiness can be best exploited. We have
found that correct seed rates are key to
producing a top crop – too low and the
leaf:stem ratio falls – so do not be tempted
to cut seed rates.
• Ready to graze in 90-110 days.
• Has great re-growth potential.
• Flexible sowing dates.
• 12.8ME and 15-24% in crude protein.
Kale – Stubble Turnips FORAGE & ROOT
18
Sow: April-July
Sowing Rate: 1½-2kg/acre broadcast
Pack: 1kg
Seed Treatment: Rovral, Thiram & Sepiret Seed
Coat or ‘Flea Beetle Treated’
Kale is ideal for fresh green autumn or winter
forage as grass availability declines. High in
protein (circa 17%) and energy (11ME), it is a
highly digestible feed of fairly low dry matter.
It is potentially the highest yielding brassica,
although slower establishing than rape and
needing longer to reach optimum yield.
Our recommended variety for stock feeding
purposes is MARIS KESTREL. We feel this
offers marginal benefits over its rivals like
Bittern and Pinfold.
Those using kale as a game cover crop and
for subsequent feeding to stock should see
our section on kale as a game crop where we
recommend the use of Goldeneye.
Sow: April-September
Use: June-December
Sowing Rate: 2-3kg/acre broadcast
Pack: 5kg or 25kg
Seed Treatment: Untreated or ‘Flea Beetle Treated’.
A fast growing catch crop which produces a
crop of around 11ME for grazing usually some
12 to 16 weeks from sowing. It is flexible
in its use and has a wide sowing window.
To improve bulb size, sowing rates can be
reduced down to 1kg per acre.
Kale
Stubble Turnips
MARIS KESTREL
A leafy dwarf hybrid which has a superior
leaf to stem ratio which converts into
improved animal performances. Short stems
bred for low stem fibre content and high
digestibility. It is resistant to lodging, has
good winter hardiness and vigorous early
growth. The growth habit of Maris Kestrel,
unlike some other kale varieties, makes it
equally suited to sheep and cattle feeding.
GRUNER ANGELITER NEW
A very high yielding variety with good
winter hardiness and excellent feeding
quality. In trials, fresh yields have been 10%
higher than Bittern. A proven variety in New
Zealand.
VOLLENDA
The most popular option for summer feeding due
to its 60:40 leaf to root ratio. It is also suitable
for winter feeding. Its resistance to bolting is
unrivalled, it has the highest yield potential and
an excellent speed of growth. All in all a very
consistent performer.
BARKANT
High dry matter yield, very winter hardy, well
proven and reliable. Its yield balance is nearer to
50:50 leaf to root making it particularly suited to
sheep and for late summer or autumn feeding.

Forage Rape
Sow: May-September
Use: July-December
Sowing Rate: 1½-3kg/acre broadcast
Pack: 5kg or 25kg
Seed Treatment: Untreated
Provides relatively lower yields per acre of energy and protein than kale but can produce
a catch crop within six weeks of planting. Fresh weight yields are not dissimilar to stubble
turnips but the crop holds its quality over a longer period and is more efficiently utilised. It’s an
excellent choice as an autumn or winter feed for finishing lambs.
grazing mix which can be grazed 2 or 3 times.
Both are fast growing products and so light grazing
at 8-10 weeks is essential to optimise the ability of
the mix to re-grow. Widely used for cow grazing
or finishing lambs. The key is to not overgraze the
Winfred to encourage re-growth. As the season
progresses, the grass dominates the mixture and
this can be taken through to the following spring
to provide a cut or graze.
Introduction FORAGE MAIZE
20
Forage Maize
With so many maize varieties on the market, we feel that it is essential
that we work impartially and independently of the breeders/agents
to ensure the material which we offer has a real advantage over
competitor varieties.
The key difference we believe is that all our varieties
are selected to deliver more feed value per acre.
To that end, we work with at least five different breeders
and carefully pre-evaluate all material, not only through
paper results but also in a practical situation. Many of you
will have been to one of our demonstration sites where
we gain some excellent knowledge about new varieties.
• The true value of a variety can be measured in terms of digestible yield and tonnes of
starch produced per acre. So we look closely at the TOTAL DIGESTIBLE YIELD not just the
starch % content.
• Total dry matter yield is certainly the biggest factor in determining the cost per tonne of
growing forage maize. However, we need to balance dry matter yield with fresh yield and
earliness to harvest.
• Cob ripeness is far more important than percentage dry matter of the whole plant, which
is often influenced by premature die back of leaves than it is by good cob ripeness.
• Varieties need to be proven over a range of growing conditions and years to provide
consistently good results before they are added to the Powermaize range.
• Varietal selection is only part of the key to producing a successful crop. It is our desire to
be involved with the growing of your crop to achieve the best results.
- Superb D value 71.6
- Superb ME - 11.5 MJ/Kg DM
- Excellent early vigour.
SEED TREATMENTS
Our standard seed treatment is to include a fungicidal treatment which gives some protection
against damping off diseases, blue moulds and seedling blight (e.g. Influx or Maxim). Additionally,
we add an insecticidal treatment which gives some protection against frit fly risk.
The alternatives are:
• Organic seed.
• GAUCHO, PONCHO or CRUISER treatment in addition to a fungicide treatment. These
are all systemic insecticidal treatments which gives some protection against pests including
wireworm. We recommend buying treated seed where crops of maize are being grown
following grass or there is a known wireworm problem. Seed with this treatment needs to be
ordered in good time – usually by the middle of February.
Game Crops
A successful game crop creates the basis for a successful shooting season, be it for sport or
and we work closely with DLF Trifolium in evaluating new crops and methods of sowing
through their nationwide work with gamekeepers and extensive trial plots in Worcestershire.
Gamekeepers will all too well know the importance of correct preparation: weed control, liming
fertiliser and muck, weed control to name but a few. Our FACTS trained Direct Sales staff
kg/acre Recommended sowing rate

Minor Crops
BUCKWHEAT
Feed & Cover 20kg/acre Pack size: 5 kilos
Frost susceptible. Good for chicks. A thick, bushy plant which produces plenty of nectar.
CANARY GRASS
Cover 2.5kg/acre Pack size: 1 kilo
Holdfast Canary Grass gives a valuable nesting cover which will last up to 10 years if thinned
out annually. Reed Canary Grass is the UK native version of Holdfast but is better on exposed
sites and its strong stems and broad leaves provide better cover.
FORAGE RAPESEED
Cover 2.5kg/acre Pack size: 5 kilos
An alternative to kale that establishes and grows rapidly. A versatile, easy to grow cover crop.
JONTY
Cover 2.5kg/acre Pack size: 1 kilo
A brassica with rapid bolting tendencies which will provide cover within 6 weeks. Produces a
turnip like root but grows seed like rape, 2’-3’ in height. The canopy has an open bottom and will
provide rapid cover through to Christmas.
LINSEED
Feed & Cover 25kg/acre Pack size: 25 kilos
A quick and easy to establish cover crop especially useful for partridges. Good as a mixture with
kale or triticale or where a break from kale is required.
MUSTARD
Cover 5-8kg/acre Pack size: 5 kilos
An economical crop which is drought tolerant but not winter hardy so use as an early cover.
Suitable for undersowing in other crops.
TEXSEL GREENS
Feed & Cover 2.5kg/acre Pack size: 1 kilo
A frost hardy cover crop superior to mustard. Produces a canopy on sturdy stems up to 5’ tall which
remains standing throughout the shooting season. Rapid growth also helps suppress weed ingression.
YELLOW BLOSSOM SWEET CLOVER
Cover 2.5-3kg/acre Pack size: 1 kilo
A crop that will last for up to 2 years as it is self regenerating. Excellent early vigour, stiff woody
stems and often considerable seed production. Grows up to 6 feet high and often grown with
kale which dominates in year one while the clover takes over in the second year.
23

Key Game Crops GAME CROPS
24
Key Game Crops
FODDER RADISH
Cover 5kg/acre Pack size: 5 kilos
Excellent rescue crop, especially where club root may be a problem. Similar to mustard,
it produces a leafy, dense plant which will reach 3 feet in 6-8 weeks. Frost susceptible and
therefore only of use until Christmas as a cover crop.
GAME MAIZE
Feed & Cover 45/50,000 seed acre pack Pack size: 1 acre
We now offer three different options: Rapid Fire, Late Shot and Triple Maize Blend.
Rapid Fire is our standard option offering: a short, stiff stem with good standing power, a low
cob carriage allowing easy access for the birds, early maturing to achieve good cobbing, good
early vigour to ensure successful establishment, exceptional winter hardiness to provide cover
through into February and seed with the highest vigour and germination.
Late Shot is our newest game maize. It’s a very late variety which may produce a small cob but
it appears to be of less interest to rabbits, rats and badgers than standard varieties due to its
maturity type.
Triple Maize Blend is detailed under our Game Mixtures section.
KALE
Cover 1-2kg/acre Pack size: 1 kilo
Kale is of probably the most popular cover crop
grown in the UK. It can be grown for one season
only (and then often utilised by livestock farmers as
a late feed for sheep or cattle) or if grown into the
second year can provide a degree of feed.
We recommend sowing the variety Goldeneye for
game cover. A giant kale with a leafy top, strong
stem, good winter hardiness and good tolerance to
disease. In SAC trials, this variety achieved a higher
vigour score than Caledonian and equal or better
club root tolerance.
QUINOA
Feed & Cover 2-4kg/acre Pack size: 1 kilo
An easy to establish, specialist game cover variety capable of providing huge amounts of high
protein seed from its flame red heads. Game birds (and greenfinches!) are readily attracted and
held by its seed production. Often grown with kale to support the stems which can lodge under
the weight of seed produced and also the kale provides some ground cover to both reduce
weed competition and provide bird shelter. (see Overdrive mixture)

SORGHUM – DWARF or GRAIN
Feed & Cover 8kg/acre Pack size: 8 kilos
An easy to establish, vigorous hybrid variety
which has large leaves, is short (3’-4’) and will
stand throughout the season. It provides ideal
cover and a warm holding and feeding area for
birds. It is very drought tolerant and can be
used as a flushing point around maize, say, as
well as being good for finches! Ideal as a club
root break crop.
SORGHUM – GIANT
Cover 12kg/acre Pack size: 12 kilos
Produces a dense cover that can be up to 6’ high if left uncut and is susceptible to lodging. It
works well as a shelterbelt for warmth and it is useful for flushing as it encourages the birds to
lift above the cover. Drought tolerant. Good companion to maize (see Four Ten mixture).
SUNFLOWER
Feed & Cover 5kg/acre Pack size: 5 kilos
The super dwarf sunflower, Diamond, has excellent standing power and the low carriage of the
large heads makes seeds readily available to ground feeding birds. We also offer a hybrid dwarf
sunflower type as well as a standard sunflower. With these two types, the best will be made by
swiping down as required. Sunflowers are best when used as part of a game mix or with a strong
cover crop like kale. Their feed contribution is mainly early. Grow only one in every four years.
TRITICALE
Feed & Cover 50kg/acre Pack size: 25 kilos
Winter varieties should be sown by the end of February but we would recommend you sow
a true spring type variety which has no vernalisation requirement. Good cover and feeding in
marginal, low fertility, drought prone areas. Unique in its tolerance of rabbit attacks.
WHITE MILLET
Feed & Cover 5kg/acre Pack size: 5 kilos
Early maturing white millet produced in the Northern hemisphere will produce a supply of up to
1t/acre of small seeds for birds if grown as a monoculture. It is often sown in conjunction with
maize or kale to provide feed and flushing areas. It is vigorous although frost susceptible and will
grow to a height of 3’. Ideally suited as a windbreak or flushing point. White millet is preferred as
a straight as it has wider leaves and a better standing power than red millet.
AMBUSH MILLET MIX
Feed & Cover 5kg/acre 1 acre pack
3kg White Millet
2kg Japanese Reed Millet
The Japanese reed millet provides season
long cover for flushing while the white
millet will provide feed to hold the birds in
the cover. Ideally suited for use as a wind
proof belt or flushing point around maize.
Exceptionally winter hardy allowing it to be
used right through the shooting season.
DECOY GAME MIX
Feed & Cover 8kg/acre 1 acre pack
3kg Intermediate Sorghum
2kg Dwarf Sorghum
1.5kg Red Millet
1.5kg White Millet
Designed on the same principles as our
Traditional Game Cover Mix but without
the sunflowers and maize. Ideal for more
exposed and margin areas.
FOUR TEN
Feed & Cover 14kg/acre 1 acre pack
10kg Game Maize
4kg Dwarf Sorghum
Dwarf sorghum provides the added warmth
and cover below the maize whilst the
mixture will provide season long cover
and some feed. Both crops have similar
husbandry techniques. Excellent for club
root prone sites with great standing ability.
Game Cover Mixtures
KWIK FIX
Feed & Cover 5kg/acre 1 acre pack
1.5kg Mustard
3.5kg Fodder Radish
Ideal for replacing or patching failed spring
game covers, this is a unique combination
of the fastest growing game cover species.
Fodder radish can provide 2’ of quality cover
in approximately 6 weeks and has the benefit
of being immune to clubroot. Mustard
increases the cover element and prolongs
the cover period. Unlikely to provide full
season cover.
MILLGAME MILLET MIX
Feed 5kg/acre 1 acre pack
2.5kg White Millet
2.5kg Red Millet
Red millet matures earlier than the white
millet thus extending the feeding period. Red
millet does have some limited cover appeal
and the mix does have a dense canopy.
Red millet also acts as a support for the
somewhat weak standing power of white
millet. Can be sown as a straight or sown
into a crop of game maize or kale to add
feed value and improve crop density.
OVERDRIVE
Feed & Cover 2.5kg/acre 1 acre pack
1.25kg Quinoa
1.25kg Kale (flea beetle treated)
Our top selling mixture. The excellent cover
of kale for shelter and the high protein feed
of quinoa is combined in this most universal
of cover and feed mixes. The kale also helps
the quinoa to remain standing.

OVER ‘N UNDER SORGHUM MIX
Cover 8kg/acre 1 acre pack
A combination of two differing heights of sorghum. The shorter gives protection from predators
while the taller acts as a windbreak.
SUNDOWN MIX
Combines the feeding potential of sunflower
and maize to ensure optimum utilisation of the
sunflower crop.
TRADITIONAL GAME COVER MIX
TRIPLE MAIZE BLEND
A traditional mixture of species specially
selected for its feed and cover qualities.
Designed for a full season of cover to provide
effective holding, feed and cover for all types
of game birds. The mix will also attract insects
to benefit all bird life. The mix should also
ensure that even in a bad season something
will grow! Also consider our Decoy Game Mix.
Feed & Cover 45,000 seeds/acre 1 acre
This mixture of early, intermediate and late maturing varieties which improves cover and extends
the feeding period. It is also true to say that it is difficult to find one variety which can deliver all
the ideal attributes for a game maize crop. By blending, it is likely that more attributes favourable
to game birds will be present than in a single variety stand.
Cover 2.5kg/acre 2 acre pack
2.5kg Winfred Hybrid Brassica
2.5kg Napoleon Forage Rape
ZOOM BRASSICA MIXTURE
A vigorous and quick growing mixture which
is ideal for replacing failed crops or patching
spring sown crops. High seedling vigour gives
a reliable establishment of a high leaf to stem
ratio crop. Flea beetle treatment is available on
this mixture.
Green Manuring
There are a number of crops available for use as a green manure. Here is our selection of the
crops available for use, the choice being affected by sowing time, problems anticipated in a
rotation and specifically the following crop. There are many examples of linked pests or diseases,
so avoid choosing green cover crops from the same plant family.
Low
A fast growing clover with brilliant red flowers which produces 2-3 tonnes of biomass per acre
with flowers in the year of sowing. Normally sown between July and September for autumn
cover before winter or spring crops. It can also be used for finishing lambs but is not persistent
under hard grazing. Sow at 6kg per acre and available in 5/10kg packs.
FODDER
July-August Low
RADISH
Ideal for improving soil structure, it should be ploughed down after about 10 weeks to avoid the
mass of material associated with the crop when the stems are fully developed. See Fodder Radish
on page 24. Sow at 3kg/acre.
FORAGE
May-August low
RAPE
A brassica which is becoming more widely used for green cover. Though not as fast growing as
mustard or fodder radish, rape does not bolt. It is also fairly hardy and keeps green through to
February by which time it should be grazed off or ploughed down. See Forage Rape on page 18.
April-
MUSTARD
low
September
Probably the best selling species for annual green manuring because of its relatively low cost and
rapid establishment. Plough in at the onset of flowering to reduce incorporation problems.
PHACELIA April-August moderate
It is an excellent weed smothering crop which is not related to arable or forage crops grown
in the UK and so creates a real break. It produces a mass of mauve flowers which attract bees,
wasps and hover flies. It can be sown in either spring or autumn and sequential plantings can
provide an excellent nectar source. It grows rapidly and requires incorporation after around 8
weeks. Sow at 4kg/acre and supplied in 5kg packs.
March-
RYEGRASS
moderate
September
The use of mixtures like MA Rocket or Olivers Tornado (see page 5/12) will be ideal for fast
establishment and the mopping up of soil nutrient reserves. Incorporate before the seed head
appears. Alternatively, the use of a MA Set Aside mixture with the inclusion of clover (MASA 2 or
MASA 4) will add fertility building qualities.
March-
VETCHES
low
September
Vetches produce around 8 tonnes of biomass in a very short time span (12-14 weeks). They
significantly increase mineral nitrogen and should be ploughed in before maturity.
Star rating system: one star indicates poor rating, five stars indicates best rating possible.
