commemorative group picture of the Project Expo 2012 attendees
Wednesday, May 30, 2012, was a day to remember for the
Computer and Communications Engineering (CCE), Biomedical
Engineering (BME), and Computer Science (CSI) students and
their respective departments at the American University of Science
and Technology. During that day, the 8th Annual AUST Engineering
and Computer Science Project EXPO 2012 was held at the
Ashrafieh Campus, whereby 35 Senior Capstone and Graduate
projects were exhibited before 40 independent jury members and
around 250 guests; these esteemed professional jury members
were selected from major industrial and academic institutions.
The event was under the patronage of H.E. Professor Hassan Diab
– Minister of Education and Higher Education, who was
represented by his advisor, Dr. Nashaat Mansour. It began with a
gathering of the jury members and AUST faculty and administrative
AUST President & Provost Attend Keuka
College’s Inauguration of New President
Keuka College stretches languidly on the banks of one of the Finger
Lakes in upstate New York. It is one of the newest US Colleges with
which AUST has concluded an agreement stipulating cooperation in
student and faculty exchange.
In May, 2012, Aline Nasreddine, a B.S. graduate in Business from AUST,
became the first AUST student to receive a Master’s degree in
International Business from Keuka College. Ms. Nasreddine was
awarded a full scholarship from Keuka for the academic year 2011-2012.
President Hiam Sakr and Provost Nabeel Haidar of AUST visited
Keuka College and participated in the inauguration ceremony of
Keuka’s new President, Professor Jorge Diaz- Herrera who comes to
Keuka after long years of experience and service at neighboring
Rochester Institute of Technology (Department of Computer Science).
For the inauguration, President Sakr prepared a presentation about
Lebanon and AUST. The ceremony was attended by several college
presidents, board members, dignitaries and representatives of
universities and colleges in China & Vietnam where Keuka offers its
programs. The event took place in a charming all wood chapel a few
feet from the picturesque lake; it was followed by a reception, dinner
members at the Office of the President with Dr. Aziz Barbar and
Dr. Ziad Abu-Faraj, who were later joined by Dr. Nashaat Mansour.
The group then headed to the exhibition area whereby the event
was declared open with the ceremonial cutting of the ribbon and
the opening speeches.
Dr. Barbar started by welcoming the honored guests and
delineated the goals of the Department of Computer Science,
which primarily aim at advancing its academic curriculum based
on local needs and international standards as well as bridging
academia with industry. He then shed light on the agreements
that the department has signed with professional entities of the
field. Dr. Barbar then expounded on the recent “Innovation
Center” that was founded at AUST in collaboration with Apple
Middle East. Continued
and fireworks. Keuka’s Chair of the Board told President Sakr that the
trustees look forward to a strong and fruitful relationship with AUST.
Keuka College has set aside several scholarships and assistantships
for excelling AUST students. Those interested are advised to contact
Dr. Ziad Haddad for more information.
On his part, Dr. Abu-Faraj, after his welcoming word,
addressed the high standards of Engineering Education at
AUST that are compliant with those set by the Ministry of
Education and Higher Education as well as the Order of
Engineers and Architects. He then emphasized the
importance of the international accreditation of the said
program with accreditation agencies such as ABET. Dr.
Abu-Faraj ended his speech by thanking all of those who
have worked towards the success of this event, mostly Dr.
Aziz Barbar, the participating students, the AUST IEEE
Student Branch, and the AUST IEEE EMBS Student
Branch Chapter.
Dr. Mansour, in his speech, expressed his and Professor
Diab's appreciation of the students' efforts embodied in the
capstone projects that they have developed under the
guidance of their faculty supervisors in the fields of CCE,
BME, CSI and ICT. He then stressed that:
i) the engineering process of developing projects is just as
important as the final product; a process that entails the
skills of critical thinking and problem solving;
ii) the importance of the competencies and skills of project
management, team-work, presentation and communication,
and documentation;
iii) CCE, BME, CSI and ICT have become an integral part
within various areas in the real-world; and,
iv) “innovation” is the keyword in the modern world and is
the strong basis to job-creation and economic
development. Without innovation, we cannot compete and
cannot catch up with the global developments. But,
innovation does not only mean a good idea, it should be
based on research and it is a lot of hard work.
Dr. Mansour ended his speech by congratulating the
students and their supervising faculty for their formidable
work; he announced that the Ministry of Education and
Higher Education, as part of its 5-year plan, is exploring
ways to nurture and encourage innovation at the school
level. He concluded by wishing AUST continued progress
and prosperity.
Subsequently, Dr. Mansour and the jury members toured
around the exhibition area, whereby each team gave a
short presentation about their project’s development. The
evaluations of the jury members were entered into a
system’s database in real-time and resulted in:
in intestinal Carcinogenesis
Cancer is a multifactorial disease involving alteration in
signaling between cells causing some to divide
uncontrollably. A myriad of genes have been implicated in
cancer development and scientists in various cell and
Molecular Biology in addition to genetics fields have been
studying these signaling mechanisms trying to untangle the
pathways leading to carcinogenesis. Dr. Rana AbdelSamad
Gebran, an instructor of Molecular Biology and
Bioinformatics at the AUST, has been studying genetic
variations implicated in colorectal carcinoma or the cancer of
the large intestine. One of the genes she has been
investigating is SOX9. SOX9 is a transcription factor
involved in numerous biological processes during
AUST’s Zahle Campus Director Dr.
Jamil Hammoud presented a paper
entitled “Out of Robotic Constructs
and Into Realistic Science: A
Critique of Conventional Economic
Wisdom” at the 7th conference of
the Euraisa Business and
Economics Society, which was held in Istanbul, Turkey
this year.
Over 300 specialists from 63 countries gathered for three
days to present, debate and discuss 294 interdisciplinary
business research papers. The political economy track of
the conference was opened with Dr. Hammoud’s paper
to their feeling of being overburden with so many social problems. The deputy explained
that the reason for the government’s weak performance is because of political reasons;
he added that the situation will remain as such until the different parties put aside their
differences and focus on what is best for the country.
After the discussion, each student received a copy of the Lebanese Constitution and
a book about the Lebanese parliament.
At the end, the students toured around the building with the deputy and left the parliament
with a hope of better political conditions for the parliament to perform its tasks.
development and adult life. It plays an important role
especially in the well-being of the intestinal epithelium.
During the presentation of her doctoral work to FHS faculty
and students last Thursday, Dr. Abdel Samad Gebrane
demonstrated that SOX9 protein is part of the oncogenic
signaling pathway. She also reported the discovery of
MiniSOX9, a shorter form of the gene. MiniSOX9 is highly
expressed in colon tumors. Her data suggested a crucial
role of MiniSOX9 in intestinal tumorigenesis. Finally, a
proteomic analysis helped identify potential new SOX9 and
MiniSOX9 partners which will be useful in deciphering the
roles of these two proteins in intestinal homeostasis and
tumorigenesis. Dr. Abdel Samad lecturing the FHS students
which focused on how neoclassical economic theory may
have contributed to the breakout of the international
financial and economic crisis that the world has been
experiencing since 2007.
After highlighting 10 principles of conventional economic
theory, Dr. Hammoud presented an epistemological
criticism which revolved around limits to rationality, limits
to complete information, limits to general equilibrium and
limits to utility. The paper was one of a few theoretical
papers presented in the conference, and it was hotly
debated during the presentation due to the fact that it
challenged the assumptions which have for long been
taken for granted in the field of economics and finance.
Five AUST journalism students participated in a seminar
organized by the UNESCO held at the Holiday Inn, Beirut
under the title of “press freedom: basic challenges and
professionalism”. The seminar was under the patronage of
the Minister of Information Walid Daouk, and lasted for two
days; it was covered by different Media firms. Many topics
were discussed by different press figures such as Talal
Salman -- Safir newspaper publisher, Nabil Bou-Monsef
editor in chief of An-Nahar newspaper, Pierre Abi Saab
editor in chief of Al-Akhbar newspaper, and many other
prominent journalists. The seminar concentrated on an
issue that is of great importance to journalists, a
phenomenon the world of press is facing: “journalists’
mistreatment”. The seminar handled problems that face
journalists on daily bases, such as abuse and threats just
Deputy Serge Toursarkissian and Mrs. Yirikian amidst the AUST students
for conveying the truth and trying to make the world a
better place by using a pen not a fatal weapon. The
conference also discussed the pressure that is being
practiced on journalists. Throughout the seminar, the
booming of social media was also discussed by different
attending figures such as Maya Rahal a media expert, Dr.
Imad Bashir and Lubna Darwich; the latter being an
Egyptian activist as well as a media expert. She explained
the effect of social media on the Egyptian revolution.
Journalists’ professionalism was also discussed and took
a big part of the conference. The seminar ended with
positive feedback and good interaction, as the students left
in hope that regulations will be set to protect them as future
journalists.
A refereed paper is accepted for presentation on June 7, 2012 on the
premises of the East Michigan University (EMU). The paper is
authored by Hassana Tabch (AUST Instructor), Linda Isenhour
Hejase (Dean at AUST). The paper is entitled:
“Predicting Ethical Perceptions and Ethical Dilemma Decisions by
Demographics and Personality Dimensions”; it will be presented by
professor McEnery.
Abstract
This research is an ongoing effort to examine the impact of variables such
as country, sex, and working experience on ethical perceptions and ethical
dilemma decisions. We found that these variables did indeed predict
decisions about the seriousness of ethical dilemmas. We will be submitting
the results to a journal shortly. We intend to extend the research to
understand whether personal variables are important: Learning Style,
Tolerance of ambiguity, and Internal/External Orientation as well as
considering the explanatory function of these personal traits in addition to
the demographic variables previously cited. Human subject procedures
The dilemma questionnaire asked subjects to decide if 13 scenarios
represented ethical issues on a scale from 1 (no significant business
ethical issue) to 5 (a very significant business issue), with a neutral point
at three. Higher scores represent more concern about the dilemmas
presented being perceived as unethical for business. We cannot assess
directly whether individuals act ethically or not. We infer the intent to act
from the perceptions by which subjects assess the seriousness of the
dilemma. This questionnaire has a reliability (Cronbach’s alpha) coefficient
of .82. We will also be examining an ethics’ attitude questionnaire, with
Cronbach’s alpha coefficient of .81.
Currently, we have 160 undergraduate and graduate students from the
United States, China, and Lebanon. We are collecting a larger sample
too in order to expand the statistical power needed for the use of more
predictive variables. We have hypothesized that Tolerance of Ambiguity
should be predictive of ethical decisions, i.e., those less tolerant of
ambiguity will perceive fewer ethical dilemmas to pose serious issues for
the organization.
wide range of hotels and casinos were proposed to all AUST students who
attended. The participants’ creativity and endeavor yielded an event not only
informative, but also one that is full of entertainment and fun.
Nutritious Value of
‘Foul & Hommos’
As part of their project, some students of the
nutrition class instructed by Mrs. Zeina El Hassan
Bizri, invited their colleagues to a breakfast at Abo
Al Abed café in Saida in an attempt to highlight
the benefits of foul and hommos in our everyday
life. This meal is very rich in soluble fiber. It lowers
the level of the damaging LDL cholesterol in the
blood; consequently, lowering the risk of heart
diseases. Beans also provide insoluble fiber,
which can keep constipation and other digestive
woes away. Beans are also rich in folic acid, iron
and magnesium, which are essential nutrients for
the nerves, blood and muscles. In combination
hommos and foul make a high quality protein.
WASH THEM FIRST!
This incident happened recently in North Texas .
A woman went boating one Sunday taking with
her some cans of coke Which she put into the
refrigerator of the boat.
On Monday she was taken to the hospital and
placed in the Intensive Care Unit. She died on
Wednesday.
The autopsy concluded she died of Leptospirosis.
This was traced to the can of coke she drank from,
not using a glass.
Tests showed that the can was infected by dried
rat urine and hence the disease Leptospirosis.
Rat urine contains toxic and deathly substances.
It is highly recommended to thoroughly wash the
upper part of all soda cans before drinking out of
them.
The cans are typically stocked in warehouses and
transported straight to the shops without being
cleaned.
A study at NYCU showed that the tops of all soda
cans are more contaminated than public toilets (i.e.).
full of germs and bacteria. So wash them with water
before putting them to the mouth to avoid any kind of
fatal accident.
PS: The Same thing applies to Beer cans!
Your finances seem to be very busy this week. You may
have been reviewing your skills and market value, and
perhaps working on a budget, too. Creating lines of
communication with customers, your bank, and anyone else you're
financially involved with could be important. The Lunar Eclipse in your
joint financial zone suggests that changes may be on the way. Stay
on the ball, but don't panic. It will all work out fine in the long term.
GEMINI May 21-June 21
You can't get away from meeting & connecting with others.
This is something you love to do and you're good at.
Things heat up even more in the relationship stakes this
week. Emotions may be running high and there might be times
when you feel like running away. Events may encourage you to
think deeply about your love life and what you want out of it.
Business partnerships may also need some consideration.
CANCER June 22-July 22
A Lunar Eclipse in your lifestyle zone could coincide with
events at work that shake up your daily routine or perhaps
health issues that could have a similar effect. Whatever
occurs may have been going on beneath the surface for some time,
but you might have missed the signals. If you feel more tired or
symptoms occur, get checked out by your health professional. Also
ask yourself what you really want.
LEO July 23-August 22
Get ready for a shakeup as a Lunar Eclipse takes place in
your romance and creativity zone. Your social life is currently
very lively, and the chances are good that you may fall in
love. But you need to be extra careful about jumping into any
relationship at this time. What seems great at the start may be
destined to take you on a strange journey. Wait a week or so before
you get too involved. Make sure you know what's going on.
VIRGO August 23-September 22
Get ready for a shakeup on the home front combined with
plenty of emotion. This week could bring a family issue out
into the open. If you need to make a decision, it might be
better to wait until the dust has settled and then talk things over with
other family members. Career issues could also be at the crux of this.
You might need to relocate in order to get a better job or promotion.
You may even decide you simply want to move. Think carefully!
LIBRA September 23-October 22
The way you say it can make a difference this week. Expect
a message, or even inspired thought or idea that could be
enlightening as well as quite emotional. You could get into a
conversation that brings up a lot intense feelings. On the other hand,
you may receive information that requires action or a decision. Don't do
anything on the spur of the moment if you can help it. Give yourself
time to think.
SCORPIO October 23-November 21
Money could be a hot topic when this week brings up a lot
of emotion around this subject. You may need to hold a
discussion with your partner about the state of your
finances. This doesn't necessarily mean they're bad. They could be
fine but still need some attention. Mercury's move into Cancer later
in the week may encourage you to get in touch with your feelings.
You might want to expand your options through study or travel.
SAGITTARIUS November 22-December 21
A Lunar Eclipse in your sign suggests that events may push
you to take action sooner rather than later on certain issues.
If you feel emotional, then try not to rush into making
important decisions. Do what you have to do to make things OK and
then wait until the dust has settled. Eclipses tend to encourage you to
push through challenges to accomplish your mission and purpose.
You'll be guided along the right path.
CAPRICORN December 22-January 19
You may find yourself in the position of helping others who
need your advice. This week you might feel like you want to
share your life philosophy with those who may need it. Your
dreams may be particularly powerful, so keep an eye on them. They
may have a special message for you. It might also be a good idea to
lighten your schedule, especially if you feel more tired than usual. A
lifestyle makeover might be in order.
AQUARIUS January 20-February 18
A Lunar Eclipse could have a powerful effect on your social
life. Don't be surprised if feelings come spilling out into the
open. Friends may come and go, and this may not
necessarily be related to anything that you do or don't do. It could all
be a question of timing. Later in the week Mercury moves into Cancer
and highlights your lifestyle zone. It might be time to take a look at
your routines and change any that aren't working for you.
PISCES February 19-March 20
Career issues could come into focus as events cause you to
rethink your current path and goals. A Lunar Eclipse in
Sagittarius could bring news that you're getting a promotion
or perhaps that a contract needs renewing or has ended. Whatever
the issue, this is your chance to celebrate all that you've achieved
and be willing to be open to new ideas and prospects. The cosmos
has great plans for you, and this could be the first step to bigger and
better things.
