October 11 <strong>2010</strong><br />

The Citizens Committee for Leashed Dogs in Lakewood Parks the Committee presented to Council and<br />

through working with the Public Works and Public Safety committees developed a pilot program<br />

The pilot program was approved by Couhcil went into effective April 10 <strong>2010</strong><br />

The pilot program allows leashed dogs in Lakewood and Kauffman parks for the period of 12 months<br />

The pilot also requires all waste station materials and signage be provided to the city by the Committee<br />

The Committee provided 8 waste stations 6 in Lakewood Park and 2 in Kauffman Park and purchased<br />

the posts from the city keeping a uniform look to the parks<br />

The Committee currently holds enough money to purchase or replace additional68 stations We have<br />

been approved and are currently working with The Lakewood Foundation as our fiscal partner<br />

Pilot Program Impact tothe City Services<br />

PublicWorks<br />

o The Public Worksstaff partnered with us and installed all of the waste stations as there<br />

were concerns about hitting underground gas and water lines if the installatidn was done<br />

outside ofthe city staff We were very grateful for their partnership<br />

o One of our committee members has kept in touch with Director Beno throughout the<br />

summer According to these interactions there are no specific issues to report other<br />

than a few phone calls about dog waste in the parks<br />

o Director Beno recently suggested we provide a small sign stating no dogs in the<br />

playground area of Kauffman Park The Committee will review and workwith Director<br />

Beno on either repurposing or providing a new sign<br />
