Meeting Minutes - January 25, 2013<br />

I. Introducti<strong>on</strong>s – R<strong>on</strong> Scott<br />

a. Welcome <strong>and</strong> welcome back! Thank you for being here!<br />

II. <str<strong>on</strong>g>Miami</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>Diversity</strong> Plan – R<strong>on</strong> Scott<br />

a. Typically instituti<strong>on</strong>s no l<strong>on</strong>ger have plans that are as l<strong>on</strong>g as <str<strong>on</strong>g>Miami</str<strong>on</strong>g>'s 1998 <strong>Diversity</strong> Plan. CODI will be<br />

revisiting the diversity plan <strong>and</strong> what it will be.<br />

b. If you would like to review <str<strong>on</strong>g>Miami</str<strong>on</strong>g>’s 1998 <strong>Diversity</strong> Plan, please c<strong>on</strong>tact R<strong>on</strong>.<br />

III. Sexual Assault Preventi<strong>on</strong> Task Force – R<strong>on</strong> Scott <strong>and</strong> Kenya Ash<br />

a. President Hodge c<strong>on</strong>vened a Sexual Assault Preventi<strong>on</strong> Task Force<br />

b. Kenya Ash, Interim Director of OEEO, chaired this task force<br />

c. In December 2012, the Task Force submitted a preliminary draft, with recommendati<strong>on</strong>s, to President Hodge<br />

d. In January, the Task Force submitted a revised draft which included several recommendati<strong>on</strong>s<br />

i. The Task Force recommended a campaign <strong>on</strong> respect <strong>and</strong> inclusi<strong>on</strong> which will c<strong>on</strong>sult with CODI –<br />

this would include a visual campaign -- examples: Green Dot Campaign; Red Flag Campaign;<br />

Safe@UNC, Expect Respect at the <str<strong>on</strong>g>University</str<strong>on</strong>g> of Michigan<br />

a. Video with student leaders<br />

b. Issuing instituti<strong>on</strong>al messages<br />

c. Led by VP of Student Affairs <strong>and</strong> Associate VP for Instituti<strong>on</strong>al <strong>Diversity</strong><br />

ii. Hosting <strong>and</strong> designing workshops <strong>and</strong> trainings regarding sexual assault preventi<strong>on</strong><br />

iii. St<strong>and</strong>ing committee for sexual assault preventi<strong>on</strong><br />

e. There is a currently a search for a fulltime staff member – Sexual Assault Resp<strong>on</strong>se Coordinator, which should<br />

be completed within the next m<strong>on</strong>th<br />

f. Questi<strong>on</strong>s <strong>and</strong> Comments:<br />

i. Questi<strong>on</strong> from Carol Michael: Did the flyer from the residence hall spark the need for creating the<br />

Sexual Assault Preventi<strong>on</strong> Task Force? Answer from Kenya Ash <strong>and</strong> R<strong>on</strong> Scott: The task force was<br />

created as result of the town hall meetings that were a result of the flyer from the residence hall.<br />

ii. Questi<strong>on</strong> from Chun Liang: Is there (or can there be) a website that includes the various crime alerts<br />

so that individuals can see the entire list of crimes? Answer from Kristie Marcum <strong>and</strong> Kenya Ash:<br />

Yes, the annual crime statistics report is part of <str<strong>on</strong>g>Miami</str<strong>on</strong>g>’s “Right to Know” website at<br />

www.<str<strong>on</strong>g>Miami</str<strong>on</strong>g>OH.edu/righttoknow. The archive of Campus Crime alerts (<strong>and</strong> the status of each case)<br />

is available <strong>on</strong> the <str<strong>on</strong>g>Miami</str<strong>on</strong>g> Police website at www.<str<strong>on</strong>g>Miami</str<strong>on</strong>g>OH.edu/police/crime-alerts/archives.<br />

iii. Questi<strong>on</strong> from Mary Jane Berman: Will the Sexual Assault Resp<strong>on</strong>se Coordinator work out of student<br />

health <strong>and</strong> wellness? Answer from Kristie Marcum <strong>and</strong> Kenya Ash: Yes, this positi<strong>on</strong> will report to<br />

Rebecca Baudry Young, Director of Student Wellness.<br />

IV. Campaign for a better campus culture – R<strong>on</strong> Scott<br />

a. The proposed campaign would:<br />

i. be an overarching campaign addressing many issues that affect the campus culture<br />

ii. include recommendati<strong>on</strong>s from the Sexual Assault Preventi<strong>on</strong> Task Force<br />

iii. include <str<strong>on</strong>g>Miami</str<strong>on</strong>g>’s values statement<br />

iv. is in line with <str<strong>on</strong>g>Miami</str<strong>on</strong>g>’s 2020 Goals<br />

b. Questi<strong>on</strong>s <strong>and</strong> Comments:


i. Questi<strong>on</strong>: Bo Brinkman: Will the Safe Z<strong>on</strong>e Program be part of this campaign? Answer: R<strong>on</strong> Scott:<br />

This campaign does not replace existing programming. This campaign is an over-arching campaign<br />

that will include various topics.<br />

V. Open Dialogue – R<strong>on</strong> Scott<br />

a. Thursday, January 31 st , 3-5pm<br />

b. 336 Shriver Center – Office of <strong>Diversity</strong> Affairs<br />

c. Open dialogue to invite individuals to state which issues they want to address related to diversity / inclusi<strong>on</strong><br />

VI. Assessment– R<strong>on</strong> Scott<br />

a. <str<strong>on</strong>g>Miami</str<strong>on</strong>g> is <strong>on</strong>ce again in the accreditati<strong>on</strong> process. <strong>Diversity</strong> initiatives/programs/projects are a comp<strong>on</strong>ent of<br />

this process.<br />

b. R<strong>on</strong> would like the members of CODI to be involved in the diversity piece.<br />

VII. List of Initiatives/Programs/Projects – R<strong>on</strong> Scott <strong>and</strong> Kristie Marcum<br />

a. Please compile a list of diversity-related initiatives/programs/projects for your area <strong>and</strong> try to have at least<br />

the start of a list by February 7 th .<br />

b. Kristie will email every<strong>on</strong>e with instructi<strong>on</strong>s for submitting their list. (We will attempt to use a Google doc or<br />

Niihka site.<br />

VIII. Future Meetings<br />

a. Locati<strong>on</strong>: all 2013 spring semester meetings will be held in the MacMillan Hall Great Room (212)<br />

b. Next Meeting: February 8 th – 1-2:30pm<br />

c. R<strong>on</strong> <strong>and</strong> Kristie will meet <strong>and</strong> figure out the schedule for the rest of the semester <strong>and</strong> then send it out to<br />

every<strong>on</strong>e<br />

IX. Announcements<br />

a. Asian Fusi<strong>on</strong> – January 26 th<br />

b. Nominati<strong>on</strong>s are due M<strong>on</strong>day, February 4 th for the Women's Leadership <strong>and</strong> Male Ally Awards <strong>and</strong> the Jennie<br />

Elder Suel Distinguished Woman of Color Award. Please c<strong>on</strong>tact Jane Goettsch or visit<br />

c. <str<strong>on</strong>g>Miami</str<strong>on</strong>g> is providing some half-price slots in Junior Scholars for M2SE students. M2SE (Minorities in<br />

Mathematics, Science <strong>and</strong> Engineering) needs to fundraise to pay the other half (about $1500), for 3-6<br />

students. These would be tax-deductible gifts to M2SE, but also directly benefit <str<strong>on</strong>g>Miami</str<strong>on</strong>g>.<br />

e. Lecture by Dr. Khalil Gibran Muhammad, Tuesday, February 12 th , 6pm, Shriver MPR B-C<br />
