the others or of a comm<strong>on</strong> model. Borrowing the terminology of Judit Tamási 16 ,<br />
there are three types of related tiles: originals (created all with the same mold),<br />
copies (<strong>on</strong>e copied after another or two copies referring to a comm<strong>on</strong> prototype.<br />
There might be small differences between such copies, when details were added<br />
to the raw clay after molding. These are the so-called imitati<strong>on</strong>s) and indirectly<br />
c<strong>on</strong>nected tiles (all inspired by some comm<strong>on</strong> image but not related through<br />
copying but through the imaginati<strong>on</strong> of the masters).<br />
Still, it is difficult to say which is the copy of which, in lack of detailed<br />
informati<strong>on</strong> <strong>on</strong> dimensi<strong>on</strong>s and without a close inspecti<strong>on</strong> of the quality of the<br />
details of the originals and not <strong>on</strong> the base of drawings, which imply a certain<br />
degree of subjectivity.<br />
T3, T4 and T7 can be defined as copies. Only the dimensi<strong>on</strong>s of the first<br />
two have been published, and even then, it is not clear if they refer to the<br />
preserved fragments or the rec<strong>on</strong>structable total dimensi<strong>on</strong>s of the tiles. The<br />
<strong>on</strong>ly clue in this case is the social c<strong>on</strong>text of the discoveries. The presence of the<br />
copy of a tile depicting str<strong>on</strong>g knightly elements, originally found in<br />
fortificati<strong>on</strong>s, in a wooden house of a market town, indicates the directi<strong>on</strong> of the<br />
social transmissi<strong>on</strong> of motifs, from upper to lower.<br />
Another couple of related tiles are T6 and T12, <strong>on</strong>e excavated from a<br />
fortificati<strong>on</strong> and the other from a curia. T6 is dated half a century earlier and is<br />
larger in dimensi<strong>on</strong>s, so in this case it seems that T6 was the original and T12 a<br />
copy made after it.<br />
T2 and T11 are (<strong>on</strong>e can say rather rare) cases of indirectly c<strong>on</strong>nected<br />
tiles whose comm<strong>on</strong> model has been identified. The two tiles, <strong>on</strong>e from a suburb<br />
and the other from a village, share the same model but are clearly not directly<br />
related since several elements differ: <str<strong>on</strong>g>George</str<strong>on</strong>g>`s helmet, his halo, the vegetal<br />
elements, the borders etc. But the models for both are a manuscript illuminati<strong>on</strong><br />
from a Flemish book of hours dated back to the beginning of the fifteenth<br />
century and a fifteenth century relief. 17<br />
The tile from Feldioara, T5, discovered in a pottery workshop, was<br />
clearly produced locally since some of its elements, like the c<strong>on</strong>ic shape of the<br />
trees, bear resemblance to reliefs from inside (altar c<strong>on</strong>sole depicting also St.<br />
<str<strong>on</strong>g>George</str<strong>on</strong>g> slaying the drag<strong>on</strong> but <strong>on</strong> horseback) and outside the local church (The<br />
Prayer <strong>on</strong> the Mountain of Olives) (see figure 4).<br />
