1976-05-31 Master of Science (Building Design and Structural Engineering) from The Technical<br />
University of Denmark (average of marks: 11,4 on a scale from 0 to 13).<br />
Final project: "A stringer method <strong>for</strong> calculation of building structures" mark: 13.<br />
1976-07-05 - 1977-10-31 Duty in the Danish Civil Defence as a lieutenant.<br />
One special task in this period was to teach Fire Service and Fire Safety at the officer’s academy.<br />
1978-02-01 - 1980-07-31 Ph.D. study: "Fire Properties of Concrete Constructions” at the Institute of<br />
Building Design, Technical University of Denmark. A new course on Structural Fire Safety was<br />
established and Stringer Theory and Building Stability was taught on other M.Sc. courses.<br />
1980-12-16 Ph.D degree defended. (Diploma signed 1981-07-04).<br />
1980-09-01 - 1986-03-31 Half time employed at the Institute of Building Design, Technical University<br />
of Denmark making projects supported by the Danish Council <strong>for</strong> Scientific and Technical Research.<br />
Design methods were developed <strong>for</strong> concrete structures subjected to the load case of fire, and thereby<br />
solving a number of problems <strong>for</strong> other load cases <strong>for</strong> example the anchorage problem. New advanced<br />
test methods were developed some of which using microwave power <strong>for</strong> heating concrete specimens.<br />
1980-09-01 - 1986-03-31 Half time employed as a consulting engineer at the structural department of<br />
M. Folmer Andersen Ltd. making structures in wood and steel and advanced concrete structures such<br />
as partly prestressed shells and untraditional walls and prestressed frames. Own object oriented cross<br />
stringer method was used <strong>for</strong> calculation of stabilizing walls, floors and shells <strong>for</strong> example <strong>for</strong> the<br />
building <strong>for</strong> the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Saudi Arabia (MOFA) and <strong>for</strong> structures made at the<br />
Royal Theatre in Copenhagen.<br />
Responsible <strong>for</strong> all structural calculations <strong>for</strong> the MOFA building, and development of EDP methods<br />
<strong>for</strong> automatic calculations of steel and concrete structures according to British Standards, and stability<br />
calculations and fire safety assessments were made. (Architect: Henning Larsen)<br />
For the rebuilding of the Royal Theatre in Copenhagen a number of untraditional constructions have<br />
been designed. Among these a post tensioned concrete portal surrounding a new hole of 150 m 2 in the<br />
old scene back wall, a 44 m long partly post tensioned half cylinder shell bearing the roof, a ribbed<br />
shell structure over the set piece workshop, a rein<strong>for</strong>cement of the brick vault over the main entrance<br />
and a project <strong>for</strong> the replacement of the group Apollo and Pegasus at the roof. Further, a new test<br />
method was developed <strong>for</strong> finding cavities in old brickwork by means of ultrasonic measurements on<br />
location (architect: Niels Koppel).<br />
Among other projects the following could be mentioned: Industrial buildings <strong>for</strong> Novo Industry Ltd.<br />
and Meadox Surgimed Inc., a 45 m high bomb safe building <strong>for</strong> the Central Bank of Iraq and a steel<br />
building <strong>for</strong> the Central administration of Greenland, a building <strong>for</strong> the Parliament of Greenland and<br />
buildings <strong>for</strong> industry, habitation and schools in Denmark and Greenland.<br />
Steel balconies were designed <strong>for</strong> fire exposure without protecting insulation <strong>for</strong> the first time in<br />
Denmark.<br />
1986-04-01 - 1986-07-31 Full time employed at the EDP department of M.Folmer Andersen<br />
consulting engineers Ltd. making structural design, and an object oriented EDP program <strong>for</strong> simulation<br />
of the flow of the cooling system at the MOFA building.

1987-02-01 - 1992-12-31 Associate Professor in building design and CAD at the Institute of Building<br />
Design of the Technical University of Denmark.<br />
Facilities <strong>for</strong> CAD research and teaching were established, and 2 courses in CAD were offered.<br />
Research and teaching on the subjects of computer aided building- and structural design, EDP system<br />
design and conceptual modelling. Stability design of multi-storey buildings. Spalling of fire exposed<br />
high strength concrete.<br />
A continuous teaching and renewal of the structural fire safety course, and from 1990 a MSc/PhD.<br />
course on fire safety design of concrete structures at London City University is given once a year.<br />
1993-01-01 - 1995-12-31 Head of Department <strong>for</strong> the Institute of Building Design DTU.<br />

Research and teaching in Denmark and UK and code work <strong>for</strong> CEN, fire safety chapters of the Danish<br />
code <strong>for</strong> concrete structures DS411 and the Danish action code DS410 and DS409.<br />
Consultant <strong>for</strong> the Danish Ministry of Housing <strong>for</strong> the introduction of per<strong>for</strong>mance based fire safety<br />
design in Denmark.<br />
1999-02-01 a full Master education on Fire Safety is established with 15 internet based courses as an<br />
Open University activity, where the subject of fire dynamics is supported by a visiting professorship of<br />
James Quintiere from University of Maryland sponsored by the Larsen and Nielsen Foundation<br />
initiating a continuous corporation with the University of Maryland and NIST.<br />
As a head of department value based management was introduced 1999-01-01, and at 2000-07-01 the<br />
department was increased to 90 employees by adopting research groups on production and<br />
management, IT and planning.<br />
2001-01-01 - Establishes the department BYG.DTU with 180 employees, and becomes a deputy head<br />
<strong>for</strong> this department leaving more time <strong>for</strong> research and teaching.<br />
Is still teaching structural fire safety design in Denmark and UK.<br />
A full set of design methods <strong>for</strong> concrete structures <strong>for</strong> the load case of fire is reported in refereed<br />
papers. A new test method <strong>for</strong> explosive spalling of fire exposed concrete is developed.<br />
A new M.Sc. study in Civil Engineering is established revising the teaching of the department.<br />

Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Saudi Arabia: Organising all structural calculations. Design of<br />
stabilizing constructions <strong>for</strong> the whole building comprising 25 concrete walls with holes and<br />
discontinuities, hung up shear walls, octagonal towers, frame constructions of concrete, vaults,<br />
composite constructions, beams and columns of steel and concrete, castellated beams, N-girders<br />
and point supported decks.<br />
The Royal Theatre: 30 m concrete beam cast in sections in 1m thick scene back wall and fully<br />
prestressed by 8 Freyssinet cables following moment curves, two17 m high concrete columns to<br />
support the beam. Stabilizing concrete shear walls. Hole of size as scene opening established in<br />
the scene back wall. New 30x30 m portal wall as a frame construction of concrete next to the<br />
back wall with an opening of 8x18 m. Special designed TT-60 prestressed concrete slabs<br />
spanning 22 m and horizontally fire separating. 44 m long half cylinder shell construction partial<br />
prestressed by 12 Freyssinet cables following moment curves and supported by 6 special made<br />
bridge supports of steel. Concrete beam hung up in wall structure by prestressed rods. Ribbed<br />
quarter cylinder shells and rib deck of rein<strong>for</strong>ced concrete loaded by stabilizing shear <strong>for</strong>ces.<br />
Stability of whole building.<br />
Holes and rein<strong>for</strong>cement of brick vault at main entrance. Replacement project <strong>for</strong> the statue of<br />
Apollo and Pegasus at the roof.<br />
Central Storehouse in Godthåb: Epoxy injection of cracks in 1000 m 2 concrete deck, where a<br />
partial prestress was established of the cracks by hanging the decks and secondary beams by<br />
means of rods in the upper storey constructions, while the deck was fully loaded during the<br />
injection, and the prestress was established by the unloading of the deck.<br />
Central Bank of Iraq: Stabilizing deck structure <strong>for</strong> bomb safe 45 m high building.<br />

Research results obtained by <strong>Kristian</strong> <strong>Hertz</strong>:<br />
Develops an object oriented EDP method <strong>for</strong> calculation of <strong>for</strong>ce distributions in shear walls and<br />
plates modelled by two crossing systems of stringers combined by shear membranes. The<br />
method can be applied on folded and connected walls and plates and in practise it has proven to<br />
be much cheaper and easier to apply than traditional finite element programs.<br />
Invents a patented machine capable of utilising the power of sea waves.<br />
Creates a set of concepts and a cognitive structure based on the theory of sets and Empiricism.<br />
Using this <strong>for</strong> a logical representation of building design data in a CAD system, and develops a<br />
number of versions of an object-oriented program <strong>for</strong> conceptual modelling <strong>for</strong> UNIX and<br />
Windows with interface to AutoCAD and a separate user interface.<br />
Makes the first coherent description of the mechanical and chemical changes of concrete<br />
subjected to high temperatures based on a comprehensive literature study of 500 references and<br />
300 test series supplemented by own test results.<br />
A new method <strong>for</strong> testing the bond strengths of variable rein<strong>for</strong>cing bars in variable concretes<br />
and in fire damaged concretes. Finds that the bond strength can be calculated <strong>for</strong> rein<strong>for</strong>cement<br />
of sufficient corrugation.<br />
A calculation model <strong>for</strong> the anchorage strength of rein<strong>for</strong>cement as a minimum of the bond<br />
strength and a splitting strength, which depends entirely on the cross section. The method gives<br />
up to 10-20 times less anchorage lengths than the codes prescribed, and <strong>for</strong> the first time it<br />
offered an explanation to the short anchorage lengths observed to be necessary <strong>for</strong> slabs in tests<br />
and practise.<br />
Explains why an effectiveness factor is needed <strong>for</strong> shear design and how it depends on the cross<br />
section.<br />
Discovers how concrete specimens can be heated to more than 1000°C in a microwave oven<br />
without giving rise to thermal stresses, which until then had spoiled any attempt on finding the<br />
mechanical properties of rapid heated concrete.<br />
Finds <strong>for</strong> the first time how the mechanical properties changes <strong>for</strong> concrete heated rapidly.<br />
Develops a fireproof concrete based on Danish raw materials.<br />
Finds as the first that high strength concrete densified by micro-silica has an increased risk of<br />
explosive spalling, even at slow heating rates.<br />
Finds that thermal stresses from hindered thermal expansion can be a precondition <strong>for</strong> explosive<br />
spalling of certain dense concretes.<br />
Develops a new test method capable of deciding whether a concrete may have a spalling problem<br />
<strong>for</strong> hindered thermal expansion by means of a standard cylinder.<br />
Finds that melamine based superplasticizing additives can give toxic gases like ammonia when<br />
heated.

Develops a full set of calculation methods <strong>for</strong> the plastic load bearing capacity of concrete beams<br />
and slabs subjected to moment load, shear and axial load, and <strong>for</strong> columns and walls. The basic<br />
methods are adopted as simplified calculations in the fire chapter of the European CEN code <strong>for</strong><br />
concrete structures ENV 1992-1-2 and in the Danish code DS411.<br />
Develops simple temperature calculation methods as exact solutions to the Fourier equation.<br />
Develops a new expression describing fully developed fires <strong>for</strong> the Danish Action code DS410.<br />
Develops a general expression describing deterioration of building materials at high<br />
temperatures.<br />
Develops design methods <strong>for</strong> slabs and walls of light aggregate concrete.<br />
Develops a new calculation method <strong>for</strong> assessing a curved lined stress-strain distribution of a<br />
concrete cross section subjected to moment load and axial load. The method can be used <strong>for</strong><br />
calculation of deflections of beams with slack and prestressed rein<strong>for</strong>cement as well as deflection<br />
and stability of cross loaded columns and fits continuously with a plastic design when the cross<br />
load varies towards ultimate load, and continuously with the Rankine <strong>for</strong>mula, when the load is<br />
varied towards a central column load. In addition the calculations can be made <strong>for</strong> fire exposure.
