Sugoroku (‘double sixes’) is a Japanese board game similar to
snakes and ladders. Its popularity peaked in the 19th century,
when the woodblock print industry was flourishing. Although
it was produced for recreation, the sugoroku board was also
an efficient tool for conveying information and was used in
education, advertising or to promote nationalist sentiment. This
sugoroku contains advertisements for various shops in the centre
of Tokyo during the early Meiji period.
