or insincere. What can<br />

the most aggressive do/ if you keep persistently<br />

kind, and as occasion <strong>of</strong>fers gently remonstrate,<br />

and seize the moment when he is bent on mischief,<br />

for trying quietly <strong>to</strong> convert him <strong>to</strong> a better frame<br />

<strong>of</strong> mind.<br />

Not so, my son, we are made for other<br />

ends ; you cannot hurt me, you hurt yourself, my<br />

son.' Then point him gently <strong>to</strong> the general law<br />

<strong>of</strong> things, that neither do the bees act so, nor any<br />

<strong>of</strong> the gregarious animals ;<br />

but avoid any <strong>to</strong>uch <strong>of</strong><br />

irony or fault-finding, and be affectionate and con-<br />

cilia<strong>to</strong>ry in <strong>to</strong>ne ; not in schoolmaster style, or <strong>to</strong><br />

show <strong>of</strong>f before others, but quietly in his own ear,<br />

even if others are standing by.<br />

Bear these nine heads in mind, gifts<br />

as it<br />

were <strong>of</strong> the nine Muses. While you still live,<br />

before it is <strong>to</strong>o late, begin <strong>to</strong> be a man !<br />

your guard against flattering as well as against<br />

petulance ; both come <strong>of</strong> self-seeking, and both<br />

do harm. In fits <strong>of</strong> anger remind yourself that<br />

true manliness is not passion, but gentleness<br />

and courtesy, the more masculine as well as the<br />

more human : this it is, and not irritation or<br />

discontentment, that implies strength and nerve<br />

and manhood ; the absence <strong>of</strong> passion gives the
