22–6. Property <strong>of</strong> persons hospitalized or medically evacuated<br />

a. The collection, inventory, safeguarding, <strong>and</strong> disposition <strong>of</strong> the personal property <strong>of</strong> persons hospitalized or<br />

medically evacuated is a comm<strong>and</strong> responsibility.<br />

b. Personal property on the person, or accompanying persons entering a medical facility, is collected <strong>and</strong> safeguarded<br />

by medical personnel. When the patient is medically evacuated, the patient’s personal property located at the<br />

medical facility is evacuated with the patient.<br />

c. When a patient dies in medical channels in the theater, the effects are evacuated with the remains (para 22–3) to<br />

the servicing mortuary affairs collection point. The effects located in the individual’s unit are collected, inventoried,<br />

<strong>and</strong> evacuated (para 22–4) to the personal effects depot.<br />

d. When a patient dies in medical channels en route to CONUS or in CONUS, the effects will be processed per the<br />

instructions in paragraphs 22–7, 22–8, or chapter 18, as appropriate.<br />

22–7. Property <strong>of</strong> persons deceased or missing aboard vessels<br />

a. When a soldier who is a passenger aboard a vessel dies or is missing (washed overboard <strong>and</strong>/or drowned) while<br />

en route to a combat area, the soldier’s effects will be collected, safeguarded, <strong>and</strong> inventoried on DD Form 1076 by the<br />

soldier’s unit comm<strong>and</strong>er, or if appropriate, the Comm<strong>and</strong>er <strong>of</strong> Troops.<br />

b. Effects found on the remains (para 22–3) will be evacuated with the remains to the mortuary affairs collection<br />

point. Other effects located aboard ship will be processed in the same manner as effects found in unit rear areas. (See<br />

para 22–4.)<br />

c. When a soldier who is a passenger aboard a vessel dies or is missing while en route to CONUS, the soldier’s<br />

effects will be collected, safeguarded, <strong>and</strong> inventoried on DD Form 1076 by the soldier’s unit comm<strong>and</strong>er, or if<br />

appropriate, the Comm<strong>and</strong>er <strong>of</strong> Troops. Upon arrival in CONUS, all effects will be turned over to the comm<strong>and</strong>er <strong>of</strong><br />

the most convenient <strong>Army</strong> installation. The installation comm<strong>and</strong>er will dispose <strong>of</strong> the effects per chapter 18.<br />

22–8. Property <strong>of</strong> persons deceased aboard aircraft<br />

a. When a soldier who is a passenger aboard an aircraft dies while en route to a combat area, the soldier’s effects<br />

will be collected, safeguarded, <strong>and</strong> inventoried on DD Form 1076 by the soldier’s unit comm<strong>and</strong>er, or if appropriate,<br />

the troop comm<strong>and</strong>er aboard the aircraft.<br />

b. Effects found on the remains (para 22–3) will be evacuated with the remains to the servicing mortuary affairs<br />

collection point. Other effects aboard the aircraft will be processed in the same manner as effects found in unit rear<br />

areas. (See para 19–4.)<br />

c. When a soldier who is a passenger aboard an aircraft dies while en route to CONUS, the soldier’s effects will be<br />

collected, safeguarded, <strong>and</strong> inventoried on DD Form 1076 by the soldier’s unit comm<strong>and</strong>er, or if appropriate, the troop<br />

comm<strong>and</strong>er aboard the aircraft. Upon arrival in CONUS where the remains are <strong>of</strong>f loaded, all effects will be delivered<br />

to the comm<strong>and</strong>er <strong>of</strong> the most convenient <strong>Army</strong> installation. The installation comm<strong>and</strong>er will dispose <strong>of</strong> the effects per<br />

chapter 18.<br />

22–9. Effects <strong>of</strong> prisoners <strong>of</strong> war, civilian internees, allied <strong>and</strong> enemy dead<br />

a. The effects <strong>of</strong> enemy prisoners <strong>of</strong> war <strong>and</strong> civilian internees will be disposed <strong>of</strong> per AR 190–8 or AR 190–57.<br />

b. The effects <strong>of</strong> allied <strong>and</strong> enemy dead that may come into custody <strong>of</strong> U.S. forces will be temporarily stored in the<br />

theater at locations designated by the theater comm<strong>and</strong>er. Effects will be returned to representatives <strong>of</strong> the governments<br />

concerned as soon as practicable. When a personal effects depot is established in CONUS, effects <strong>of</strong> prisoners <strong>of</strong> war,<br />

civilian internees, <strong>and</strong> allied <strong>and</strong> enemy dead will not be sent to the personal effects depot for storage or disposition.<br />

22–10. <strong>Disposition</strong> <strong>of</strong> miscellaneous personal effects<br />

a. Prisoners <strong>and</strong> persons absent without leave. The shipment at Government expense <strong>of</strong> the property <strong>of</strong> military<br />

prisoners <strong>and</strong> persons absent without leave is not authorized. Such property will be disposed <strong>of</strong> per AR 190–47 <strong>and</strong> AR<br />

630–10.<br />

b. Property for which ownership has not been determined. This property will be disposed <strong>of</strong> through Defense<br />

Reutilization <strong>and</strong> Marketing Service channels.<br />
