insurance, gratuities, arrears in pay, awards, decorations, or personal property. If asked such questions, the escort will<br />

advise that this information may be obtained by asking the CAO.<br />

c. Complete DA Form 5329 (Escort Report). Instructions for completing the DA Form 5329 <strong>and</strong> required distribution<br />

are shown on the form.<br />

d. Follow the detailed procedures in DA PAM 638–2 for the escort while en route <strong>and</strong> upon arrival at the place<br />

designated by the PADD.<br />

12–7. Civilians accompanying remains as special escorts<br />

a. Civilian escorts will be expected to perform the same duties as military escorts.<br />

b. A civilian, who is not a Federal government employee, will be issued invitational travel orders. The orders will<br />

cite section 1482, title 10, United States Code (10 USC 1482) as authority. These orders will state that the escort is<br />

entitled to—<br />

(1) Travel, sleeping accommodations en route, <strong>and</strong> per diem (at rates prescribed for military personnel (JFTR, vol 1,<br />

chap 4)) while actually accompanying remains from the place where custody <strong>of</strong> remains is accepted to the final<br />

destination.<br />

(2) Return travel, sleeping accommodations, <strong>and</strong> per diem (at rates indicated) to the location where custody <strong>of</strong><br />

remains was accepted, if required.<br />

c. If a civilian accompanying remains as an escort also is entitled to transportation as a dependent (JTR, vol. 2, chap<br />

7), orders may provide for one <strong>of</strong> the following, as applicable, in view <strong>of</strong> circumstances <strong>of</strong> the individual case:<br />

(1) Return travel to place where escort accepted custody <strong>of</strong> remains payable from Casualty <strong>and</strong> Mortuary Affairs<br />

Open Allotment.<br />

(2) Onward travel from place where remains were delivered payable from Casualty <strong>and</strong> Mortuary Affairs Open<br />

Allotment in an amount not to exceed cost <strong>of</strong> return travel as indicated in (1) above.<br />

(3) Travel as authorized by JTR, volume 2, chapter 7. Except for valid reasons, a dependent who accompanies<br />

remains as an escort will not be provided return transportation <strong>and</strong> then subsequently provided travel (JTR, vol. 2, chap<br />

7) that duplicates travel performed as an escort.<br />

Chapter 13<br />

Interment <strong>and</strong> Interment Allowances<br />

Section I<br />

Interment<br />

13–1. Place <strong>of</strong> interment<br />

Soldiers <strong>and</strong> certain dependents are eligible to be buried in a national or post cemetery at Government expense<br />

(national <strong>and</strong> post cemeteries are hereafter referred to as Government cemeteries). They also may be eligible to be<br />

buried in a State Veterans’ Cemetery. The PADD may elect to have remains buried in a private cemetery. <strong>Army</strong><br />

interment allowance will help to defray costs.<br />

13–2. Multiple interments<br />

Under certain circumstances the remains <strong>of</strong> an individual may be interred more than once. Multiple interments <strong>of</strong> an<br />

individual may occur when—<br />

a. There is recovery <strong>of</strong> additional portions subsequent to the first interment. The PADD may elect to have the<br />

subsequently recovered portions placed in the same casket as the previously interred portions, placed in a separate<br />

container <strong>and</strong> interred in the same grave space as the initially interred portions, or casketed <strong>and</strong> interred in a different<br />

grave space. Transportation, Funeral <strong>and</strong> interment allowances, <strong>and</strong> funeral travel are authorized for the interment <strong>of</strong><br />

subsequently recovered portions.<br />

b. There are individually identified portions <strong>and</strong> group remains. The PADD may elect to have the individually<br />

identified portions included in the group burial or have a separate interment. Transportation, funeral <strong>and</strong> interment<br />

Allowances, <strong>and</strong> funeral travel are authorized for both the interment <strong>of</strong> the individually identified portions <strong>and</strong> group<br />

remains.<br />

c. <strong>Remains</strong> are disinterred <strong>and</strong> re-interred at the direction <strong>of</strong> CDR, PERSCOM (TAPC–PED–F). The CDR,<br />

PERSCOM (TAPC–PED–F) may authorize the disinterment <strong>of</strong> remains when required to confirm the identification <strong>of</strong><br />

interred remains. Cost <strong>of</strong> the disinterment <strong>and</strong> re-interment are paid from the Casualty <strong>and</strong> Mortuary Affairs Open<br />

Allotment.<br />

13–3. Eligibility for interment in Government cemeteries<br />

a. Government cemeteries. Information regarding eligibility criteria is contained in publications listed below. No<br />
