Surface embalming. Direct contact <strong>of</strong> body tissues with embalming chemicals.<br />

Vascular (arterial)embalming. Use <strong>of</strong> the blood vascular system <strong>of</strong> the body for temporary preservation, disinfection,<br />

<strong>and</strong> restoration. Usually accomplished through injection <strong>of</strong> embalming solutions into the arteries <strong>and</strong> drainage from the<br />

veins.<br />

Embalming analysis (case analysis)<br />

That consideration given to the dead body prior to, during, <strong>and</strong> after the embalming procedure is completed.<br />

Documentation is recommended.<br />

Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)<br />

Governmental agency with environmental protection regulatory <strong>and</strong> enforcement authority.<br />

Firming<br />

Rigidity <strong>of</strong> tissue due to chemical reaction.<br />

Fixation<br />

Act <strong>of</strong> making tissue rigid. Solidification <strong>of</strong> a compound.<br />

Formaldehyde (HCHO)<br />

Colorless, strong-smelling gas that when used in solution is a powerful preservative <strong>and</strong> disinfectant. Potential<br />

occupational carcinogen.<br />

Formaldehyde gray<br />

Gray discoloration <strong>of</strong> the body caused by the reaction <strong>of</strong> formaldehyde from the embalming process with hemoglobin<br />

to form methylhemoglobin.<br />

Hardening compound<br />

Chemical in powder form that has the ability to absorb <strong>and</strong> to disinfect. Often used in cavity treatment <strong>of</strong> autopsied<br />

cases.<br />

Hematoma<br />

A swelling or mass <strong>of</strong> clotted blood caused by a ruptured blood vessel <strong>and</strong> confined to an organ or space.<br />

Humectant<br />

Chemical that increases the ability <strong>of</strong> embalmed tissue to retain moisture.<br />

Infant<br />

Child less than 1 year <strong>of</strong> age.<br />

Injection<br />

Act or instance <strong>of</strong> forcing a fluid into the vascular system or directly into tissues.<br />

Laceration<br />

Wound characterized by irregular tearing <strong>of</strong> tissue.<br />

Lesion<br />

Any change in structure produced during the course <strong>of</strong> a disease or injury.<br />

Maggot<br />

Larva <strong>of</strong> an insect, especially a flying insect.<br />
