Training period<br />

An authorized <strong>and</strong> scheduled regular inactive duty training period. A training period must be at least two hours for<br />

retirement point credit <strong>and</strong> four hours for pay. Previously used interchangeably with other common terms such as drills,<br />

drill period, assemblies, periods <strong>of</strong> instruction, <strong>and</strong> so forth. (Joint Pub 1–02)<br />

Trench burial<br />

A method <strong>of</strong> burial resorted to when casualties are heavy whereby a trench is prepared <strong>and</strong> the individual remains are<br />

laid in it side by side, thus obviating the necessity <strong>of</strong> digging <strong>and</strong> filling in individual graves. See also burial. (Joint<br />

Pub 1–02)<br />

Trench interment<br />

A method <strong>of</strong> interment in which remains are placed head-to-toe. Used only for temporary multiple burials. (This term<br />

<strong>and</strong> its definition modify the existing term “trench burial,” <strong>and</strong> its definition is approved for inclusion in the next<br />

edition <strong>of</strong> Joint Pub 1–02.)<br />

Unaccompanied baggage<br />

Suitcases, trunks, or luggage not in association or possession <strong>of</strong> the decedent.<br />

Unaccounted for<br />

An inclusive term (not a casualty status) applicable to personnel whose person or remains are not recovered or<br />

otherwise accounted for following hostile action. Commonly used when referring to personnel who are killed in action<br />

<strong>and</strong> whose bodies are not recovered. See also casualty; casualty category; casualty status; casualty type. (Joint Pub<br />

United States civil authorities<br />

Those elected <strong>and</strong> appointed public <strong>of</strong>ficials <strong>and</strong> employees who constitute the governments <strong>of</strong> the 50 States, District <strong>of</strong><br />

Columbia, Commonwealth <strong>of</strong> Puerto Rico, United States possessions <strong>and</strong> territories, <strong>and</strong> political subdivisions there<strong>of</strong>.<br />

Very seriously ill or injured<br />

The casualty status <strong>of</strong> a person whose illness or injury is classified by medical authority to be <strong>of</strong> such severity that life<br />

is imminently endangered. Also called VSII. See also casualty status. (Joint Pub 1–02)<br />

Voluntary training<br />

Training in a non-pay status for individual Ready Reservists <strong>and</strong> active status St<strong>and</strong>by Reservists. Participation in<br />

voluntary training is for retirement points only <strong>and</strong> may be achieved by training with Selected Reserve or voluntary<br />

training units; by active duty for training; by completion <strong>of</strong> authorized military correspondence courses; by attendance<br />

at designated courses <strong>of</strong> instruction; by performing equivalent duty; by participation in special military <strong>and</strong> pr<strong>of</strong>essional<br />

events designated by the Military Departments; or by participation in authorized Civil Defense activities. Retirees may<br />

voluntarily train with organizations to which they are properly preassigned by orders for recall to active duty in a<br />

national emergency or declaration <strong>of</strong> war. Such training shall be limited to that training made available within the<br />

resources authorized by the Secretary concerned. (Joint Pub 1–02)<br />

Will<br />

A written <strong>and</strong> signed statement, made by an individual, that provides for the disposition <strong>of</strong> their property when they<br />

die. (See also codicil <strong>and</strong> probate.)<br />

Wounded<br />

Abrasion<br />

Antemortem injuries resulting from friction <strong>of</strong> the skin against a firm object <strong>and</strong> causing removal <strong>of</strong> the epidermis.<br />

Accessory chemicals<br />

Chemicals used in addition to vascular (arterial) <strong>and</strong> cavity embalming fluids. Include but are not limited to hardening<br />

compounds, preservative powders, sealing agents, mold-preventive agents, <strong>and</strong> compress application agents.<br />
