Returned to military control<br />

The status <strong>of</strong> a person whose casualty status <strong>of</strong> duty status—whereabouts unknown or missing has been changed due to<br />

the person’s return or recovery by U.S. military authority. Also called RMC. See also casualty status; duty status—<br />

Selected Reserve<br />

Those units <strong>and</strong> individuals within the Ready Reserve designated by their respective Services <strong>and</strong> approved by the<br />

Joint Chiefs <strong>of</strong> Staff as so essential to initial wartime missions that they have priority over all other Reserves. All<br />

Selected Reservists are in an active status. The Selected Reserve also includes persons performing initial active duty for<br />

Seriously wounded<br />

A stretcher case. See also Wounded. (Joint Pub 1-02)<br />

Service representative<br />

Any individual, either military or DA civilian, duly appointed to represent the Department <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Army</strong>, for an assigned<br />

mission. Within the Casualty <strong>and</strong> memorial Affairs are, an individual, appointed to represent the <strong>Army</strong> in dealings with<br />

the next <strong>of</strong> kin <strong>of</strong> casualties.<br />

Slightly wounded<br />

A casualty that is a sitting or a walking case. See also wounded. (Joint Pub 1–02)<br />

St<strong>and</strong>by Reserve<br />

Those units <strong>and</strong> members <strong>of</strong> the Reserve Components (other than those in the Ready Reserve or Retired Reserve) who<br />

are liable for active duty only, as provided in the U.S. Code, title 10 (DOD), sections 10151, 12301, <strong>and</strong> 12306. See<br />

also active duty; Ready Reserve; Reserve Components; Retired Reserve. (Joint Pub 1–02)<br />

Stopover<br />

Planned stop <strong>and</strong> delay in the onward movement <strong>of</strong> remains at a designated intermediate funeral home between point<br />

<strong>of</strong> origin <strong>and</strong> receiving funeral home.<br />

Summary court-martial<br />

A summary court-martial is comprised <strong>of</strong> one commissioned <strong>of</strong>ficer on active duty. Unless otherwise prescribed by the<br />

Secretary concerned, a summary court-martial shall be <strong>of</strong> the same armed force as the accused.<br />

Supporting installation<br />

<strong>Army</strong> installations located within a CAC area <strong>of</strong> responsibility, but not an integral part <strong>of</strong> the CAC organization.<br />

Supporting installations provide local resources to the CAC.<br />

Temporary cemetery<br />

A cemetery for the purpose <strong>of</strong>:<br />

a. The initial burial <strong>of</strong> the remains if the circumstances permit or<br />

b. The reburial <strong>of</strong> remains exhumed from an emergency burial. (Joint Pub 1–02)<br />

Temporary interment<br />

A site for the purpose <strong>of</strong>: a. The interment <strong>of</strong> the remains if the circumstances permit or b. The reburial <strong>of</strong> remains<br />

exhumed from an emergency interment. (This term <strong>and</strong> its definition modify the existing term “temporary cemetery,”<br />

<strong>and</strong> its definition is approved for inclusion in the next edition <strong>of</strong> Joint Pub 1–02.)<br />

Terrorism<br />

The unlawful use or threatened use <strong>of</strong> force or violence against individuals or property to coerce or intimidate<br />

governments or societies, <strong>of</strong>ten to achieve political, religious, or ideological objectives. A victim <strong>of</strong> a terrorist act<br />

directed against the United States or its allies is a hostile casualty.<br />

Testator<br />

A person who dies with a valid will.<br />
