Funeral service management<br />

The administration <strong>of</strong> a funeral service enterprise, the activities <strong>of</strong> which encompass marketing, <strong>of</strong>fice, personnel,<br />

facilities, <strong>and</strong> financial management.<br />

Galvanized<br />

Steel that has been coated with zinc for increased resistance to rust.<br />

Gasket channel<br />

A device found on cup top gasketed caskets, used to hold the transverse gasket to seal the space between the head <strong>and</strong><br />

foot caps.<br />

Gauge<br />

A measurement <strong>of</strong> thickness <strong>of</strong> metals; the number <strong>of</strong> sheets <strong>of</strong> metal necessary to equal approximately one inch <strong>of</strong><br />

thickness.<br />

Gimp<br />

A strip <strong>of</strong> metal, plastic or cloth that is attached to the inside <strong>of</strong> the panel, covering the area at which point the roll<br />

(cove) is anchored.<br />

Grave<br />

An excavation in the earth as a place for interment.<br />

Grave box<br />

An outer enclosure consisting <strong>of</strong> a body <strong>and</strong> a one- or two-piece lid.<br />

Grave liner<br />

An outer enclosure that <strong>of</strong>fers protection from the earth load but without sealing qualities.<br />

Grave marker<br />

The method <strong>of</strong> identifying the occupant <strong>of</strong> a particular grave. Permanent grave markers are usually made <strong>of</strong> metal or<br />

stone <strong>and</strong> give such data as name, date <strong>of</strong> birth, <strong>and</strong> date <strong>of</strong> death.<br />

Graves registration<br />

Supervision <strong>and</strong> execution <strong>of</strong> matters pertaining to the identification, removal, <strong>and</strong> burial <strong>of</strong> the dead <strong>and</strong> collection <strong>and</strong><br />

Grave straps<br />

Webbing or similar material used for lowering <strong>of</strong> the casket into the grave.<br />

Group burial<br />

A burial in a common grave <strong>of</strong> two or more individually unidentified remains. See also burial. (Joint Pub 1–02)<br />

Group interment<br />

An interment in a common grave <strong>of</strong> two or more individually unidentified remains.<br />

Half couch casket<br />

A casket so designed as to display the deceased from the waist up.<br />

Hammertone<br />

A sprayed finish that has the appearance <strong>of</strong> small indentations in the metal (as if struck by a ball-peen hammer);<br />

the“indentations” are in the paint <strong>and</strong> appear as the paint dries; usually found on inexpensive caskets.<br />

Hardwood<br />

Any tough, heavy timber with a compact texture; any deciduous tree (any tree that loses its leaves annually).<br />

Hardwood casket<br />

A casket made <strong>of</strong> woods that are heavy, close-grained, resistant woods that are the ultimate in wood caskets <strong>and</strong> among<br />

the most expensive to purchase.<br />
