Crown<br />

The uppermost part <strong>of</strong> the cap <strong>of</strong> the casket, extending from rim to rim.<br />

Crushed interior<br />

A form <strong>of</strong> casket interior created by placing the lining material on a metal form, weights added, the material steamed<br />

<strong>and</strong> then attached to a suitable upholstery backing material.<br />

Crypt<br />

A chamber <strong>of</strong> a mausoleum <strong>of</strong> sufficient size, generally used to contain the casketed remains <strong>of</strong> a deceased person.<br />

Custodial parent<br />

The parent who received legal custody <strong>of</strong> child from a civil court. Appropriate court documents have been completed<br />

<strong>and</strong> filed as required by the appropriate civil law.<br />

Death<br />

Cessation <strong>of</strong> physical life characterized by the absence <strong>of</strong> metabolism <strong>and</strong> a total lack <strong>of</strong> irritability.<br />

Death call (notification <strong>of</strong> death)<br />

First contact serving to inform the funeral home that a death has occurred <strong>and</strong> providing the funeral home with basic<br />

information about the deceased.<br />

Death certificate<br />

A legal document showing vital statistical data pertaining to the deceased.<br />

Death notice (funeral notice)<br />

A classified notice publicizing the death <strong>of</strong> a person <strong>and</strong> giving those details <strong>of</strong> the funeral service that the survivors<br />

wish to have published.<br />

Debtors<br />

A person or organization that owes money or goods to another.<br />

Deceased<br />

A casualty status applicable to a person who is either known to have died, determined to have died on the basis <strong>of</strong><br />

conclusive evidence, or declared to be dead on the basis <strong>of</strong> a presumptive finding <strong>of</strong> death. The recovery <strong>of</strong> remains is<br />

not a prerequisite to determining or declaring a person deceased. See also casualty status.<br />

Decedent’s legal residence/domicile<br />

A person’s fixed, permanent, <strong>and</strong> principal home for legal purposes such as voter registration <strong>and</strong> tax assessment.<br />

Delayed entry program<br />

A program under which an individual may enlist in a Reserve Component <strong>of</strong> a Military Service <strong>and</strong> specify a future<br />

reporting date for entry on active duty in the Active Component that would coincide with availability <strong>of</strong> training spaces<br />

<strong>and</strong> with personal plans such as high school graduation. See also active duty; Reserve Components. (Joint Pub 1–02)<br />

Detainee<br />

A term used to refer to any person captured or otherwise detained by an armed force. (Joint Pub 1–02)<br />

Detainee collecting point<br />

A facility or other location where detainees are assembled for subsequent movement to a detainee processing station.<br />

Detainee processing station<br />

A facility or other location where detainees are administratively processed <strong>and</strong> provided custodial care pending<br />

disposition <strong>and</strong> subsequent release, transfer, or movement to a prisoner-<strong>of</strong>-war or civilian internee camp. Joint Pub<br />

Died <strong>of</strong> wounds received in action<br />

A casualty category applicable to a hostile casualty, other than the victim <strong>of</strong> a terrorist activity, who dies <strong>of</strong> wounds or<br />

other injuries received in action after having reached a medical treatment facility. Also called DWRIA. See also<br />
