Columbarium<br />

A structure or room or other space in a building or structure <strong>of</strong> most durable <strong>and</strong> lasting firepro<strong>of</strong> construction, or a<br />

plot <strong>of</strong> earth, containing niches, used, or intended to be used to contain cremated human remains.<br />

Combination case<br />

A transfer container consisting <strong>of</strong> a particle board box with a cardboard tray <strong>and</strong> cover to satisfy air shipping<br />

regulations.<br />

Combination unit<br />

Any product consisting <strong>of</strong> a unit or a series <strong>of</strong> units which are designed or intended to be used together as both a casket<br />

<strong>and</strong> as a permanent burial receptacle.<br />

Commissioned <strong>of</strong>ficer<br />

Officer in any <strong>of</strong> the Armed Services who holds grade <strong>and</strong> <strong>of</strong>fice under a commission issued by the President.<br />

Commital service<br />

That portion <strong>of</strong> a funeral service that is conducted at the place <strong>of</strong> interment or other method <strong>of</strong> disposition <strong>of</strong> dead<br />

human remains.<br />

Common carrier<br />

One who publicly undertakes to transport from place to place for a stated compensation, the property <strong>of</strong> any person<br />

who may request his services up to the capacity <strong>of</strong> his facilities.<br />

Composition board (pressed board, particle board)<br />

Particles <strong>of</strong> wood bonded together with a waterpro<strong>of</strong> glue.<br />

Concrete box<br />

An outer enclosure <strong>of</strong> two or three component parts <strong>of</strong> unfinished concrete.<br />

Conditional bill <strong>of</strong> sale<br />

A formal instrument for the conveyance or transfer <strong>of</strong> title to goods <strong>and</strong> chattels subject to one or more conditions.<br />

Conference <strong>of</strong> Funeral Service Examining Boards (CFSEB)<br />

An organization established in 1904 that is concerned with coordinating the activities related to the structure, test<br />

format <strong>and</strong> grading process for the National Board Exam. It also serves as a clearing house for licensure information,<br />

provides examinations for state boards <strong>and</strong> acts as a resource for state laws, rules <strong>and</strong> regulations for its membership.<br />

Contaminated remains<br />

<strong>Remains</strong> <strong>of</strong> personnel that have absorbed or upon which have been deposited radioactive material, or biological or<br />

chemical agents. (Approved for inclusion in the next edition <strong>of</strong> Joint Pub 1–02.)<br />

Continuously hospitalized<br />

A time period beginning at the date <strong>of</strong> retirement, discharge, or release from active duty <strong>and</strong> ending with the soldier’s<br />

death. During this time period the soldier must be carried in a patient by a medical treatment facility. Transfer between<br />

medical treatment facilities, or between types <strong>of</strong> patient care (inpatient, inpatient subsisting out, domilicary care, or<br />

custodial care) does not interrupt the continuity <strong>of</strong> the hospitalization period.<br />
