Casualty status<br />

A term used to classify a casualty for reporting purposes. There are seven casualty statutes: (1) deceased, (2) duty<br />

status—whereabouts unknown, (3) missing, (4) very seriously ill or injured, (5) seriously ill or injured, (6) incapacitating<br />

illness or injury, <strong>and</strong> (7) not seriously injured. See also casualty; casualty category; casualty type; deceased; duty<br />

Casualty type<br />

A term used to identify a casualty for reporting purposes as either a hostile casualty or a nonhostile casualty. See also<br />

Cemetery<br />

An area <strong>of</strong> ground set aside <strong>and</strong> dedicated for final disposition <strong>of</strong> the deceased.<br />

Cenotaph<br />

A monument erected to the memory <strong>of</strong> the dead, with the dead human body not present.<br />

Ceremony<br />

A formal or symbolic act or observance; similar to ritual, but it may or may not have symbolic content.<br />

Certified copy <strong>of</strong> death certificate<br />

A legal copy <strong>of</strong> the original death certificate.<br />

Child<br />

With respect to a member or former member <strong>of</strong> a uniformed service, means the unmarried legitimate child, unmarried<br />

adopted child, unmarried stepchild, or unmarried person who is placed in the home <strong>of</strong> the member or former member<br />

by a placement agency (recognized by the Secretary <strong>of</strong> Defense) in anticipation <strong>of</strong> the legal adoption <strong>of</strong> the person by<br />

the member or former member; <strong>and</strong> who otherwise meets the requirements specified in paragraph (2)(D) <strong>of</strong> 10 USC<br />

5742.<br />

Chromium nickel<br />

An alloy <strong>of</strong> chrome <strong>and</strong> nickel.<br />

Church truck<br />

A wheeled structure designed to collapse for storage <strong>and</strong> transportation, used to support a casket in the funeral home,<br />

church or home.<br />

Civilian internee<br />

1. A civilian who is interned during armed conflict or occupation for security reasons or for protection or because he<br />

has committed an <strong>of</strong>fense against the detaining power. 2. A term used to refer to persons interned <strong>and</strong> protected in<br />

accordance with the Geneva Convention relative to the Protection <strong>of</strong> Civilian Persons in Time <strong>of</strong> War, 12 August 1949<br />

(Geneva Convention). See also Prisoner <strong>of</strong> War.<br />

Civilian internee camp<br />

An installation established for the internment <strong>and</strong> administration <strong>of</strong> civilian internees. Joint Pub 1–02)<br />

Civil Law Enforcement Agency<br />

Nonmilitary law enforcement agency with authority to enforce the local, State, or Federal law.<br />

C<strong>of</strong>fin<br />

A case or receptacle for dead human remains that is anthropoidal in shape.<br />

Collecting point<br />

A point designated for the assembly <strong>of</strong> personnel casualties, stragglers, disabled material, salvage, <strong>and</strong> so forth, for<br />

further movement to collecting stations or rear installations. (Joint Pub 1–02)<br />
