h. (3.3.1) Simultaneous cremation. The simultaneous cremation <strong>of</strong> more than one human remains within the same<br />

cremation chamber is specifically forbidden.<br />

i. (3.3.2) Identification. Immediately prior to being placed within the cremation chamber, the identification <strong>of</strong> the<br />

human remains shall again be verified by the crematory authority. Upon verification, the identification from the outside<br />

<strong>of</strong> the hardwood casket shall be removed <strong>and</strong> placed near the cremation chamber control panel where it shall remain in<br />

place until the cremation process is complete.<br />

j. (3.4) Processing <strong>of</strong> cremated remains. See the following paragraphs.<br />

k. (3.4.1) Removal from cremation chamber. Upon completion <strong>of</strong> the cremation, ins<strong>of</strong>ar as is humanly possible, all<br />

residual <strong>of</strong> the cremation process shall be removed from the cremation chamber <strong>and</strong> the chamber swept clean. The<br />

residual shall be placed within a container or tray that will ensure against commingling with other cremated remains.<br />

The identification shall be removed from the control panel area <strong>and</strong> attached to the container or tray to await final<br />

processing.<br />

l. (3.4.2) Final processing. All residual <strong>of</strong> the cremation process shall undergo final processing. The residual shall<br />

be manually cleaned <strong>of</strong> anything other than bone fragments <strong>and</strong> the fragments shall then be processed so as to reduce<br />

them to unidentifiable dimension, less than one-eighth inch in size.<br />

m. (3.4.3) Prostheses, bridgework, or similar items. All body prostheses, bridgework, or similar items removed from<br />

the cremated remains shall be destroyed by the crematory authority unless authorization to do otherwise is specifically<br />

granted in writing by the authorizing agent.<br />

n. (3.5) Packaging <strong>of</strong> cremated remains. See the following paragraphs.<br />

o. (3.5.1) Sealable container. The entire processed remains shall be placed in a sealable container. The sealable<br />

container contents shall not be contaminated with any other object.<br />

p. (3.5.2) Temporary sealable container. The sealable container together with the identification <strong>of</strong> the cremated<br />

remains shall be placed within a temporary sealable container. Should the cremated remains within the sealable<br />

container not completely fill the container, the extra space shall be filled with clean absorbent cotton <strong>and</strong> the lid or top<br />

then securely closed.<br />

q. (3.5.3) Second sealable container. If the entire processed remains will not fit within the sealable container, the<br />

remainder shall be placed in a second, separate sealable container.<br />

r. (3.5.4) Boxed sealable container. When a sealable container is used to return the processed remains, the container<br />

shall be placed within a corrugated box <strong>and</strong> all box seams shall be taped closed to increase the security <strong>and</strong> integrity <strong>of</strong><br />

that container. The outside <strong>of</strong> the container shall be clearly identified with the name, rank, <strong>and</strong> social security number<br />

<strong>of</strong> the deceased person whose processed remains are contained therein.<br />

s. (3.6) Release <strong>of</strong> containerized cremated remains. See the following paragraph.<br />

t. (3.6.1) Release authority. The crematory authority shall release <strong>and</strong> give the containerized cremated remains to the<br />

contract funeral service establishment <strong>and</strong> escort the same day the processed cremated remains are containerized.<br />

Checklist for Inspection <strong>of</strong> Funeral Homes Before Award <strong>of</strong> Contract for <strong>Care</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Remains</strong><br />

H–1. Appearance <strong>and</strong> location<br />

Investigate establishment as to appropriate appearance <strong>and</strong> location.<br />

H–2. Business <strong>and</strong> financial reputation<br />

Investigate the business <strong>and</strong> financial reputation <strong>of</strong> the firm as well as its community st<strong>and</strong>ing.<br />

H–3. Facilities, equipment, <strong>and</strong> supplies<br />

Investigate facilities, equipment, <strong>and</strong> supplies to ascertain the following:<br />

a. External appearance <strong>of</strong> the building gives the impression <strong>of</strong> being well maintained. It does not need to be<br />

pretentious or imposing.<br />

b. Furniture <strong>and</strong> furnishings present a clean <strong>and</strong> well-kept appearance. Decorating is in good taste <strong>and</strong> well<br />

maintained.<br />

c. Preparation room is clean, sanitary, <strong>and</strong> well ventilated, <strong>and</strong> proper equipment is available. (This equipment will<br />

include instruments, embalming supplies, stationary operating table, hot <strong>and</strong> cold running water, waste disposal<br />

facilities, cosmetics, <strong>and</strong> so forth.)<br />

d. Establishment has an adequate chapel, reposing room or rooms, storage facilities, music equipment, <strong>of</strong>fice<br />

facilities, <strong>and</strong> equipment necessary for religious services.<br />

e. Embalmers are licensed.<br />

f. Firm has sufficient employees to care for the normal workload <strong>and</strong> can obtain sufficient assistance from other<br />

local firms in an emergency.<br />
