i. (10.6.3) Autopsied remains. If a partial or complete autopsy has been performed, a six-point arterial injection with<br />
multi-site drainage shall be accomplished. The arterial chemical injection concentration solution requirements indicated<br />
in paragraph 10.6.1, as applicable, shall also apply. Following the arterial injection, the thoracic <strong>and</strong> abdominal walls<br />
shall be hypo-injected by means <strong>of</strong> a trocar or syringe with an arterial solution <strong>of</strong> the same strength as injected<br />
arterially. Treatment for organs or portions <strong>of</strong> organs that have become separated during autopsy investigation shall be<br />
removed from the cavities <strong>and</strong> immersed in concentrated cavity chemical having a 30-index (percent) or greater. Inner<br />
surfaces <strong>of</strong> body cavities shall be treated with a liberal application <strong>of</strong> a gel preservative, then the organs or portions <strong>of</strong><br />
organs returned to the cavities in their normal anatomical location <strong>and</strong> covered with hardening compound. The<br />
calvarium shall be replaced, scalp sutured, <strong>and</strong> hair treated as indicated for adult autopsied remains.<br />
j. (10.6.4) Treatment <strong>of</strong> scalp (viewable). When scalp has been shaved, procedures indicated in paragraph 6.1.4 shall<br />
apply.<br />
k. (10.6.5) Mutilated h<strong>and</strong>s (viewable). Procedures indicated in paragraph 6.1.5 shall apply.<br />
l. (10.6.6) Dressing remains. Procedures indicated in paragraph 6.1.6 shall apply.<br />
m. (10.6.7) Embalmer evaluation. Procedures indicated in paragraph 6.1.7 shall apply.<br />
n. (10.6.8) Placement in casket. Procedures indicated in paragraph 6.1.8 shall apply.<br />
o. (10.6.9) Quality assurance. Procedures indicated in paragraph 6.1.9 shall apply.<br />
p. (10.6.10) Encasing casket. Procedures indicated in paragraph 6.1.10 shall apply.<br />
q. (10.6.11) Loading remains. Procedures indicated in paragraph 6.1.11 shall apply.<br />
C–11. (11) Transportation <strong>of</strong> remains<br />
a. (11.1) Removal <strong>of</strong> remains. Transport remains in a suitable covered vehicle (hearse, ambulance, covered truck)<br />
that prevents exposure <strong>of</strong> the shipping container to public view, from a place designated by the contracting <strong>of</strong>ficer or<br />
his designate to the place where processing or reprocessing is to be performed. More than one remains may be moved<br />
in said vehicle at a time, but stacking <strong>of</strong> one container on top <strong>of</strong> another is prohibited.<br />
b. (11.1.2) Delivery <strong>of</strong> remains. Delivery <strong>of</strong> remains, to include the escort <strong>and</strong> the escort’s return from a crematory<br />
or a National Cemetery (when interment is immediate), will be in a suitable covered vehicle (as indicated above) from<br />
place where processing or reprocessing is performed, to any place designated by the contracting <strong>of</strong>ficer or his<br />
designate, to include delivery to the flight line at the aerial port <strong>of</strong> embarkation (APOE). Stacking <strong>of</strong> one casket or<br />
outer case on top <strong>of</strong> another is prohibited.<br />
(1) (a) <strong>Remains</strong> moving by common carrier shall be delivered to the airport or rail terminal not later than 2 hours<br />
before scheduled departure time.<br />
(2) (b) <strong>Remains</strong> to be moved by air from APOE will be delivered to flight line at the time designated by the<br />
contracting <strong>of</strong>ficer or the contracting <strong>of</strong>ficer’s designate.<br />
(3) (c) A hearse shall be required when remains are delivered direct to: (1) a national cemetery, (2) a funeral home<br />
or residence, or (3) a crematory. The hearse shall be clean, highly polished, <strong>and</strong> in good mechanical condition.<br />
(4) (d) <strong>Remains</strong> moved to a National Cemetery, crematory, funeral home or residence will arrive at destination at<br />
the time specified by the contracting <strong>of</strong>ficer or the contracting <strong>of</strong>ficer’s designate.<br />
(5) (e) The personnel dress code indicated in paragraph 7.4 shall apply.<br />
(6) (f) The reusable metal transfer case shall be returned to a location as directed by the contracting <strong>of</strong>ficer or the<br />
contracting <strong>of</strong>ficer’s designate. The contractor shall clean <strong>and</strong> sanitize the transfer case each time after removing<br />
remains from the case.<br />
C–12. Cremation<br />
Cremation procedures contained in paragraph 8.1 shall apply.<br />
C–13. Hygienic practices<br />
Hygienic procedures contained in paragraphs 9a <strong>and</strong> b shall apply.<br />
C–14. (1) Scope<br />
a. (1.1) This specification (in two sections) establishes minimum st<strong>and</strong>ards for caskets <strong>and</strong> shipping cases.<br />
b. This paragraph is reserved for future use.<br />

Caskets<br />
C–15. (2) Classification<br />
a. (2.1) Casket types <strong>and</strong> sizes. Burial caskets covered by this specification shall be the following type <strong>and</strong> sizes.<br />
b. (2.1.1) St<strong>and</strong>ard size 18-gauge metal sealer cut-top casket. The inside dimensions shall not be less than 78 inches<br />
in length, measured between the inner surfaces <strong>of</strong> the end panels, <strong>and</strong> 23 inches in width, measured between the inner<br />
surfaces <strong>of</strong> the side panels.<br />
