4.5. THROUGH APPROPRIATE ZONATION<br />

a) A legally constituted core area or areas devoted to long term<br />

protection, acording to the conservation objectives of the<br />

biosphere reserve, and of suficient size to meet these objectives<br />

The two core areas included in the proposed <strong>Santana</strong> Biosphere Reserve correspond<br />

to areas classified under various regimes of protection and which are subject to various<br />

measures of protection and conservation.<br />

“Sítio <strong>da</strong> Rocha do Navio” Natural Reserve<br />

The Rocha do Navio site has a total area of 1822 hectares, comprising the entire<br />

area defined between the maximum high tide line and 100 meters bathymetric, bounded<br />

on the east and west by the Ponta dos Clérigos and the ponta de São Jorge, respectively,<br />

and includes the islets Ilhéu <strong>da</strong> Viúva and Ilhéu de São Jorge, which resulted from the<br />

coastline recoil caused by marine abrasion on the various volcanic materials.<br />
