responding to human pressure<br />

Assessing the need for up<strong>da</strong>ting the legal mechanisms enabling the proper management<br />

of the site and maintaining its natural and economic value.<br />

12.3. RURAL AREA<br />

Farms and forests areas that define the stan<strong>da</strong>rd for rural areas, occupying a total<br />

area of 39,505 hectares, of which 3865 ha correspond to the agricultural sector and 35<br />

640 ha correspond to the total forest area.<br />

The Island’s forest area comprises 15 500 ha of natural forest and 20,140 ha of<br />

exotic forest. The areas of native forest on the island include the laurel forest which<br />

comprises communities of indigenous tree species such as Bay tree (Laurus<br />

novocanariensis), <strong>Madeira</strong> laurel (Ocotea foetens), <strong>Madeira</strong> mahogany (Persea indica),<br />

Picconia (Picconia excelsa), Beefwood (Heberdennia excelsa), <strong>Madeira</strong> Holly (Ilex<br />

perado), Canary holly (Ilex canariensis), Dogwood (Rhamnus glandulosa), <strong>Madeira</strong><br />

Pittosporum (Pittosporum coriaceum), Lily-of-the-valley tree (Clethra arborea), Wax<br />

myrtle (Myrica faya) and Canary laurel (Appolonias barbujana) of altitude and forest<br />

areas <strong>Madeira</strong> Juniper (Juniperus cedrus maderensis) and Yew (Taxus baccata). Of the<br />
