A welcome from
HRH The Duke of York
I would like to welcome everyone to the impressive
Royal Troon Golf Club for this year’s Young Champions
Trophy. I believe the combination of this magnificent
links course and the Scottish climate will provide the
players with a firm but fair challenge and a very worthy
winner will emerge at the end of the week.
For those of you competing for the Young Champions
Trophy, this week will provide you with an opportunity
to develop your golfing skills in a competitive tour style
environment. It will also provide you with a chance
to enjoy the social and educational events on offer
throughout the week which are all part of what makes
The Duke of York Young Champions Trophy unique.
I am delighted that the event has gone from strength
to strength over the years and I am proud of the fact
that it showcases such immense young talent. Good
luck and enjoy the week!
A welcome from
John Simpson
A very warm welcome to the 12th staging of The Duke of York Young
Champions Trophy. It is a real pleasure to be holding our event this
year at the prestigious Royal Troon Golf Club, which has hosted The
Open Championship on no less than eight occasions and The Amateur
Championship six times.
The event has grown significantly and this year we are privileged to watch
so many Junior Champions from 33 countries with handicaps averaging
+2.0. We have continued with our aim to expand the competition
geographically and are delighted this year to welcome champions from all
corners of the globe.
On a personal note, I would like to thank Royal Troon Golf Club for
their assistance and excellent hospitality this year and also to His Royal
Highness The Duke of York, together with all the Sponsors, for their
invaluable support and assistance over the years.
I wish all the Junior Champions the best of luck and an enjoyable and
successful week on and off the golf course!
A welcome from
Royal Troon Golf Club
On behalf of the Royal Troon Golf Club, I would like to welcome His Royal
Highness, The Duke of York, together with the sponsors and all the competitors
and their families and friends to Troon.
It is an honour for Royal Troon to host The Duke of York Young Champions
Trophy, especially this year, having already hosted The Amateur Championship
for the sixth time. It has been a rewarding year for the Club as The R&A has
confirmed that The Open Championship will be returning to this venue for the
ninth time in 2016.
Previous winners of Championships at Troon include many of the legendary
names of golf, including Arnold Palmer and Tom Watson, and their scores have
demonstrated that the course is a stern test for all players. Partly this is due to
our Scottish weather and you will soon appreciate why the course is known as
‘the breezy links of Troon’.
For all competitors, irrespective of your success, I hope this is the first of many
visits and in future you have the opportunity to enjoy the variety of golf courses
we have here in Ayrshire. For those boys who will make golf their career I hope
to see you return to play in 2016 along with the top professionals.
May I wish you all success and hope that you enjoy the coming week.
Where Future Stars Come To Light
In singing golf’s praises, the late Sir Henry Cotton
would often marvel at how it was a game for
everyone – all ages, all standards and both sexes. At
the same time, he would note, approvingly, that it
had what it takes to be competitive and social at the
one time.
Without a doubt, this winner of three Opens
would have seen The Duke of York Young Champions
Trophy as the optimum in junior tournaments. Not
least because of the way in which the world’s top
boys and girls compete alongside each other for a
title which every one of them wants for his or her
golfing CV.
Last year, the extent to which the Young
Champions Trophy works was neatly encapsulated in
the denouement – a play-off between England’s Harry
Casey and a Spanish girl by name of Harang Lee.
Seldom can a play-off have attracted more
attention, with the boys at Royal Liverpool giving
the impression that it mattered to rather more than
merely Casey that he should emerge the winner.
The girls, meantime, were backing the elegant Lee
for all they were worth. As it turned out, Casey won
at the first extra hole where he was just a whisker
away from bagging a birdie. “It was strange,” said
the Englishman. “It was harder to have to beat a girl
than a boy.”
Harry Casey,
2011 winner
9
In 2009, the then 15-year-old Moriya Jutanugarn,
sister of Ariya, won outright. Nor was she the only
girl to have the better of the boys in that sometimes
stormy week at Dundonald Links. Laetitia Beck
from Israel finished in second place, leaving Richard
Jung from Canada as the first male in the mix.
Needless to say, Jung had mixed feelings about being
congratulated on that score.
Moriya Jutanugarn,
2009 winner
At a time when the Young Champions Trophy
is celebrating its 11th anniversary, its scroll of
champions embraces as many as seven different
nationalities – and not always the most obvious
ones. In 2010 at Royal St George’s, for example, the
winner was Gudmundur Kristjansson from Iceland, a
relatively new golfing land. In 1990, there were only
1,000 Icelandic people playing the game but, today,
there are as many as 17,000 and their number, not to
mention their enthusiasm, is rising all the time. This
year, Gudrun Bjorgvinsdottir and Ragnar Gardarsson,
respectively the Icelandic Girls’ and Boys’ champions,
will be bidding to follow Kristjansson in making their
mark in this premier junior event.
The Duke of York’s initial vision for his
tournament has never changed. For the most part,
it was born out of alarm at the number of young
players who were turning professional without
having any real understanding of what they were
about. This former Captain of The R&A felt that they
needed an event in which they could look at their
rivals of the future and draw comparisons.

Where Future Stars Come To Light
“As a rule,” said HRH, “youngsters spend a lot of
their time playing events where there is a massive
gulf between the best players and the worst. I
wanted them to understand that there are countless
talented golfers out there and, above all, I wanted
them to be realistic.”
Since not all of the best young players can expect
to make the grade in the professional arena, the
Duke is adamant that they should be armed with
a back-up plan: “You want to give youngsters the
chance to play golf to the best of their ability but, if
they can keep on with their education at the same
time, for heaven’s sake let’s help to make it happen.”
HRH The Duke of York with John Simpson and
scholars Heidi Baek and Jordan Mann
The Duke is certainly playing his part through the
much sought after academic and golf scholarships
offered at Wellington and Whitgift Colleges via his
Duke of York Sports Foundation. Not only that, but
he likes to have an educational element to each
of his events. Last year, the players enjoyed a tour
of Liverpool’s historical waterfront, the city and
the docks before enjoying an official dinner in the
Beatles’ old haunt, the Cavern Club. This year, there
will be a visit to Prestwick Golf Club, home of The
Open in its earliest years.
Returning to his tournament, the Duke has
always been mindful
of the need to balance
the ledger by setting
some of the pluses of
the professional way
of life alongside his
warnings. In which
connection, he took
aim, from the start, on
giving his competitors
a tantalising glimpse
of what could be in
store if they were to
make it on tour. BMW
provide the same
courtesy car service
at his event as they do
Tom Watson
for contestants at The
Ryder Cup, while the
DOY Young Champions
Trophy is staged over
one famous links after
another. Royal Troon,
of course, is a venue
where Arnold Palmer
and Tom Watson are
among those who have
lifted The Open’s
Claret Jug.
The juniors can
take these famous
golfing tests in their
stride. Across the last eleven years handicaps have
plummeted to the point where as many as 70% of
this year’s cosmopolitan field – the entrants come
from 33 different lands and all five continents – have
handicaps in the +1 to +5 range.
It was back in 2000 that the Duke of York first
advised The Queen of his plans and mentioned
that he was looking for an appropriate prize. Her
Majesty disappeared into the
vaults of Buckingham Palace
and reappeared bearing a
handsome silver sugar bowl to
serve as the trophy. England’s
17-year-old Michael Nester
was the earliest recipient when
played at Royal Liverpool in 2001.
Nester is one past winner
who has yet to fulfil his pristine
promise, but he, no less than
Zac Gould, who defeated Rory
McIlroy at Kingsbarns to win in
2004, knows only too well that golfers peak at very
different stages.
McIlroy’s career has blossomed beyond belief
since he turned professional in 2007 with a handicap,
would you believe, of plus six. He won the 2011 US
Open at the tender age of 22 and followed up this
summer with a victory in the US PGA Championship.
On each occasion, he won with eight shots to spare.
John Simpson, who co-founded the Young Champions
Trophy with Prince Andrew, has vivid memories of
seeing the then 15-year-old McIlroy at Kingsbarns.
“He looked so young,” chuckles Simpson,
who used to manage Nick Faldo in the days when
the Englishman won his six majors. “He had this
wonderfully natural swing – and a lovely manner to
go with it.”
McIlroy is not the first competitor from the ranks
of those who have played in the Young Champions
Trophy to have won a major. Anna Nordqvist – “a
superb striker and a long hitter,” to use Simpson’s
words – had that honour when she won the 2009
HRH The Duke of York with Rory McIlroy in 2004
LPGA Tour Championship five years after she had
recorded the first of her two top-girl finishes in the
Duke’s event.
Pablo Martin, Oliver Fisher, Matteo Manassero,
Carly Booth and Melissa Reid are five more former
players to have demonstrated that they have what
it takes to make it to the very top. Manassero won
the Amateur medal at The Open and at The Masters
before embarking on a professional career in which
he has picked up two winners’ cheques while still in
his teens. Meanwhile Carly, Europe’s current No. 1
on the women’s front, has already secured wins this
year in the Scottish and Swiss Opens.
As for Reid, she played alongside Laura Davies
in the four-balls as Europe enjoyed a historic victory
in the 2011 Solheim Cup at Killeen Castle. Reid says
she will never forget “the very special feel” to the
Duke of York Young Champions Trophy. “I was on
my best behaviour,” she recalled. “I’ve never had an
on-course temper, but I remember making a special
effort to play well and to speak the Queen’s English,
not that anyone would have noticed!”
10 11
Stiggy Hodgson and Tom Lewis, are similarly on
the Duke’s long list of stars-in-the making. Hodgson,
who had notched 20 aces by the time he turned 21,
won the Young Champions Trophy in 2008. Lewis,
for his part, finished a relatively lowly sixth in 2009,
Moriya Jutanugarn’s year of years. But look at
what followed. He came out on top in only his third
tournament as a professional, having earlier held a
share of the first-round lead – he was still an amateur
at the time – in The Open at Royal St George’s.
Carly Booth
The Duke of York Young Champions Trophy
now returns to Scotland where, after some of the
gale-force gusts of Hoylake a year ago, it is hoped
that Royal Troon will do at least something to bare
its teeth for this year’s participants who have been
making waves around the golfing world.
Sam Williams, Murray Rose, Alexandra Peters, Edward Peters, Heidi
Baek and Jordan Mann, all aged between 15 and 18 with handicaps
ranging from 4 to +2. Last year Heidi won the US Junior Masters at
TPC Sawgrass and Alexandra was selected to play for England at
the Girls’ Home Internationals. Jordan is now studying at Harvard
University on a full scholarship whilst Ed has started his scholarship
at Purdue University (USA).
The Duke of York Sports Foundation two years ago expanded
the programme to include Whitgift, near London, and awarded a
scholarship to 11 year old Aaron Landicho. The Foundation’s goal is
to award a total of 8-10 scholarships at any one time to individuals
that would not otherwise have had such a unique opportunity.
Funds are raised through the generosity of companies and
individuals at fund raising events such as the annual Swinley Forest
Golf Day and the 2-day Sponsors’ Golf Tournament during The Duke
of York Young Champions Trophy which this year takes place at
Royal Troon, Ayrshire, Scotland and next year at Royal St George’s,
Sandwich, Kent.
