PRESIDENT’S REPORT 16 APRIL 2011
Welcome to our 50 th presentation night for Wynnum Manly District Cricket Club.
It’s been a while in the planning but we can now enjoy it.
I wanted to mention an apology – from Noel Gorman – Noel is not well and could not join us
tonight - Noel played a big part in our history at Boundary St – being president for 14 years. Hope
he gets well soon.
We’re here to enjoy each other’s company so I just want to make a few remarks
There’s history around – there’s placemats – there a book on your table – we will make more
copies available for those who want a copy – it will be available on the web in a few days,
The highlight of the season was first grade’s final win – where’s the firsts?
The win was our fifth first grade win and a fairytale finish to win in our fiftieth year.
Apart from the team effort there are a couple of individual performances we should recognise –
The rare feat of a century and 6 wickets by Chris Simpson and two 50’s by Ryan Poole. Fourth
grade were unlucky to be caught in a washed out semi final.
This year marks the end of an era so after 730 matches next year there will no Poole boys
playing with Ryan and Kristian announcing their retirements.
We had our best Queensland representation with five players in Chris Simpson, Ryan Broad, Ben
Laughlin, Jason Floros and Alister McDermott who jined us from the Gold oast this season.
Cameron Trask and Adam McDermott were selected in the Queensland Indigenous Team for the
Carnival in Alice Springs
I must acknowledge the success of the coaching team led by Steven Fryer with assistance from
Geoff Paulsen and Brendan Smith returning to Wynnum after 17 years. Frysie and Mappers are
already plotting for next season
I’d like to acknowledge our sponsors without whose support we would struggle financially.
Mal Day - Holiday Magic, now over 12 years support,
Damian Bender Korda Mentha, Good to have you with us tonight
Barton’s Bayside,
Konica Minolta Noel Hendrix,
Mark Gaskell Gabba Sporting Products,
Ken Healy Gloves Off
Gayle Broad Smooch.
I would like to thank the Captains for their efforts. And the selectors Graham Mapri for the volume
of work he does to get eight teams on the paddock. To the individual winners congratulations.
You will note that we will present only the top awards tonight. The individual winners will be on
screen and trophies will be available later.
To our management Committee – Neil King in carrying the increasing administrative burden, Noel
Hendrix with the challenges of treasury and his assistance with printing with
Graham Mapri for his work in producing our placemat and keeping our website going as well as
the other roles he does. To the other members we acknowledge their contribution.
To our past players Andrew Courtice and Greg Ritchie gentlemen thank you for your contribution
tonight.
Enjoy the evening.
In our fiftieth season we had five players who played for Queensland – Chris Simpson, Ryan Broad, Ben
Laughlin, Jason Floros (in his debut season) and Alister McDermott - the first in our history that this has
happened. There were two occasions where four players (Simpson, Broad, Laughlin and Floros) played
in the same match – in limited over games against the touring Sri Lankans on 22 October 2010 and
against Victoria at the Gabba on 16 October 2010. This was the first time where four players played in a
match since 15 November 2000 where Stuart Law, Scott O’Leary, Scott Prestwidge and Adam Dale
played a Mercantile Mutual One Day game in Perth. Broad, Floros and McDermott played two Sheffield
Shield games together – against Western Australia in Perth and Victoria at the Gabba in March 2011.
Simpson, Laughlin and Floros played T20 against New South Wales at Olympic Park.
Allrounders Cameron Trask and Adam McDermott represented Queensland at the Imparja Cup carnival in
Alice Springs and were then selected to compete in the 2011 Arafura Games as part of Australian
Indigenous Development squad. McDermott is also a Queensland Indoor player. Trask’s performances
also earned him a Cricket Australia scholarship for 11-days at the Global Cricket School in India.
Chris Simpson has now played nine seasons for 51 matches, 57 one dayers and 24 Twenty 20’s for
Queensland and has taken a total of 119 wickets.
Ryan Broad has now played six seasons and 51 matches for Queensland scoring 2886 runs at 32.79
scoring seven centuries and 12 fifties. Ben Laughlin had another injury interrupted season where he
played only one Shield match and two one dayers and two T20’s. He has now played 34 matches for
Queensland and taken 56 wickets.
In his debut season Jason Floros played three Shield games, seven limited overs and two T20 matches.
Alister McDermott has played three Shield games and 10 limited over games.
OBITUARY
Noel Francis Gorman.
Life Member and Past President Noel Gorman passed away on 15 June 2011 after an ongoing battle with
illness. We offer our sympathy to his family.
After three years on the committee, where he was Promotions Officer Noel Gorman was elected
President in 1980, a position he kept for a record term of 14 seasons until March 1994. Noel presided
over the Boundary Street development and produced two fields and a clubhouse. If he was not a founding
father of the Club he was closely related. During this time he was a Delegate and an Executive member
of the Queensland Cricket Association. Noel was made a life member in 1987 in recognition of his
contribution to the Club.
In 1993, the decision was taken to join with Wynnum Soccer and later Bulimba Hockey at Boundary
Street and with changes to licensing and gaming regulations a building program was undertaken and a
joint Sports club formed to operate the licensed premises and contribute to the running of multi sports.
Noel Gorman oversaw this development with board members from the sporting clubs. When the new
complex was opened in 1994 the pavilion overlooking the Number 1 oval was named the Noel Gorman
Pavilion. In 2000 when the old number one ground at Boundary Street was relinquished to soccer it was
decided that the new Club rooms would carry Noel Gorman’s name. This was realised in February 2007
when the new rooms were officially opened and named. Noel continued his involvement with sponsorship
and support.
.
First Grade Report 2010-11 – Ryan Poole
Worth the Wait
It is my pleasure to be given the opportunity to give an insight into the competition winning first grade
season and at the same time be able to reflect on my time with the great club that is Wynnum-Manly.
Winning a premiership is every player’s ultimate goal and to achieve that in the fashion this team did this
year is an incredible achievement. The satisfaction and fulfillment that comes with working for so long and
achieving success cannot be under estimated and I congratulate and thank all those involved to make
this a reality. I apologize if I get a bit sentimental or reminiscent in this report however it may be my last
contribution for a while and if I didn’t it just wouldn’t be me……..
Our season started like many others, lots of talk about player movement and the hope that we could
strengthen our squad and that maybe the rumours were true and Luke Waters had been acquired by
Redlands. There was good and bad news on this front because although Lukey was staying he would be
late arriving back. The excitement around the club was that Alister McDermott would be joining us,
bolstering our bowling stocks and finally giving us a bowler who could bowl an outswinger (it can’t be that
hard Benny-ask Dolf). Not since the days of the great Reginald Troy ”Nutbush” Watts have we seen a
bowler able to take the ball away from the bat with regularity and contribute to a ‘keepers stats and keep
slips interested and we all know Simmo needs a reason. So recruitment complete we embarked on our
season under the guidance of Steve”lets be ****’s” Fryer. Pre-season is a bit hazy for me but I do
remember something mentioned about Churchie gym and foreshore run’s but a player of my physical
nature and experience is usually excused from such futuristic training methods. I did however attend the
now annual pre-season Caloundra trip which usually involves some slogging and team bonding and with
this complete we were ready for the long season ahead.
23

First game was the local derby against Redland’s and the beginning of Flo’s habit of losing tosses when
presented with a belter. This fixture proved to be one of the most boring games in living memory with a
certain Redland’s player admitting “we are happy with a draw against you blokes” and proceeding to bat
till lunch on the second day. This defeatist attitude has never been popular with Wynnum and we let the
opposition know that their sportsmanship or lack thereof was not appreciated and the suggestion of a
Redlands-Norths merger was floated multiple times. The one highlight of this game was a Ryan Broad
century which I know boosted confidence in the camp and indicated that Dagger was headed for a big
season-this was later proven to be unfounded. We collected our first win with a solid display against
Valley’s and the emergence of Nathan Rabnott as a quality first-grade batsman. This wasn’t the first time
this year that Rab’s would inflict pain on the Diehard’s and I received great pleasure from watching him
fulfill his potential all year.
Rain played a major factor in this year’s competition with the next two games washed out as Bill Albury
Oval resembled the set of Waterworld for over a month. We returned against Norths away and thanks to
some intelligent batting from Luke Waters we registered a decent total. This game however was all about
one man and that was Tim Evans who proceeded to dismantle the Viking’s batting line up with precision
and guile. I don’t think I am alone in mentioning that this came as a surprise to the rest of his team mates
who were not fully aware of his possession of these traits. Dolf however won us this game and it wouldn’t
be the first time he contributed to our eventual success.
We let the next game against the Gold Coast slip as Dolf again had us in good position but we couldn’t
post a decent total after Flo looked dangerous. Next were the bayside rivals Sandgate and Flo continued
his excellent form with the Queen in hand as we bowled on a road and they duly posted 300+ with all of
our bowlers toiling hard. The next week was one of the best run chases ever seen from a Sea-Eagles
team as it rained all week and even our own groundsman wrote us off. This didn’t stop Fryer, Poole and
others from giving up and pump in hand we dried that wicket and managed to start on time with Sandgate
licking their lips in anticipation of a win. Luckily for us the moon was not full and the tide was out as
Nathan Rabnott and Luke Waters batted superbly and we rallied from 5/150 to win this game. Over my
career there have been some great battles with Sandgate but we have had the wood on them recently
which is very satisfying and this win was one of the best.
Our next assignment was Sunshine Coast away which is always difficult and we were a little bit worried
when we lost the toss and were asked to bat on what looked a very good wicket. To compare this wicket
to a trampoline would be doing it a favour as we lost a couple of early wickets to deliveries which have not
been seen since Dennis Lillee bowled in full flight on a WACA greentop. Luke Waters and Chris Simpson
showed enormous determination to get us to lunch and guts out a period when the incoming batsman
was visibly flinching and we managed to post 160. We knew this was a good score on this wicket and
Ben Laughlin took full advantage by bumping out the Coast for 110. Small highlight to this innings was
Wynnum actually calling a player back-not seen since I was verballed by my own team mates for doing
similar at Beenleigh a few years ago. The boys then went on with the job as Will ”batting hours only”
Prowse took their attack apart with a blistering ton and Flo ripped through them for an outright win.
Bogey side University were next and this was without doubt the lowlight of the season as we were
bundled out for 59-quite embarrassing and on the old boys day too. The only highlight from this day was a
quote from the great Ian Duncan who informed us that we had been bowled out for 33 the year we last
won the comp. We entered the rain affected 20/20 period next and performances were mixed with the
end result being we missed out on the finals of this competition. We never hit any great heights, which
was hard considering we played two games on what resembled a Vietnamese rice paddy and
encountered umpires that couldn’t calculate accurate targets. Excuses aside we just didn’t aim up in this
format and didn’t deserve to play finals.
We came back after Christmas and put together a really good team performance to beat Uni. There were
plenty of contributors and Tim Evans again led the way. This game also provided the emergence of a
quality mid-season signing as Craig Rosario was welcomed back to the Sea-Eagles bringing with him his
bowling talents and witty dressing room repertoire-we missed you Nunz. Safe to say the green and gold
juggernaut was now rolling and on the back of Alun Patullo Trophy winner Nathan Rabnott we accounted
24

for Valleys and Sandgate comfortably and then drew with Wests with Rab’s again tonning up for three in
a row. Never before have I witnessed or heard of someone going three centuries in a row in first grade
and full congratulations to Rab’s who despite being in great touch always put the team first in every
situation. The regular season was completed with the comprehensive destruction of Beenleigh who must
have wished (maybe they did) they played the rain card as they ran into a Wynnum team at full flight with
Will Prowse and Ben Nicholson batting superbly and winning without losing a wicket.
The culmination of this round and the fact Toombul had lost presented Wynnum-Manly with our first ever
Cam Battersby Cup victory as Two Day Premiers. Suffice to say this was celebrated in the traditional
Wynnum way and I can report there was not a dry eye at the club for this momentous occasion. We
needed however to get back to reality quickly as we now had a home semi against our nemesis the Gold
Coast.
It’s not often you can recall a really satisfying moment in your career but hearing the weather reports
during the week leading up to this game, observing Benny spray a certain umpire and watching the
puddles of doom appear on Bill Albury Oval this game is right up there. The result was sweet justice for
what had occurred to us the previous year and we prepared for the Final knowing we deserved our spot.
The Final was nearly the perfect game from this great team. Everyone contributed and we outplayed a
very good Toombul team over four days to win our first premiership in 15 years convincingly. Will Prowse
looked great and batted patiently but powerfully, “Bobby” is more than ready for the next step and would
excel if given an opportunity as he proved in this final. Ryan Broad was as always our rock and a great
barometer of how the team is travelling. Dagger contributed a valuable fifty at a crucial time as usual.
Jason Floros made it look so easy and I look forward to watching him bat for many years to come. Flo is
all class and I hope he goes all the way. Chris Simpson is our talisman-when he’s on we don’t lose.
Having the benefit of Simmo for most of the year is immeasurable not only for the young guys but I also
love playing with Simmo as one thing is guaranteed-it is never boring! His man of the match effort in the
final was phenomenal and a pleasure to witness.
What can I say about Nathan Rabnott, that apart from being wired very similarly to yours truly you cannot
be happier for the bloke. He achieved so much this year and carried the team for much of the season on
his shoulders. He is a deserved winner of the Alun Patullo and has a bright future. Luke Waters was
awesome all season and showed great courage in situations where others would have backed down. One
of the true characters of the team and I’m sure he will look back at the season with fondness.
Geoff Paulsen’s contribution was again massive and although the “Pro” didn’t have a big season number
wise his experience and wisdom was vital. Guys won’t realise it now but Geoff will have a profound effect
on many careers at this club.
Ben Laughlin is simply the guy you want on your - team-competitive, talented and determined. Again
bowled awesome in the final and knew when the extra effort was needed. No one expected Benny to get
to where he has which must make it all the more satisfying but I know for a fact Benny gives the same for
Wynnum as he did for his country. One of the best bowlers I have kept to and the best fielder I have seen,
Ben deserves every success he’s had and then some. Alister McDermott is a great bowler and a great
bloke, he brought a new energy and enthusiasm to the team which massively contributed to our success.
It was a real pleasure to play alongside him (thanks for the outies Ali). Craig Rosario is the best bowler I
have seen never to play first-class cricket. How? I don’t know. Nunz was a massive pick up for us and he
always managed to get the big wickets like Lynn and Townsend in the final. Don’t know what his plans
are but I hope he keeps knocking on the door.
I also need to acknowledge the players that contributed to our success but regrettably did not play the
final. Tim Evan’s had a great year and came of age as a first-grade bowler and will be a spearhead in
future years. I am a massive Ben Nicholson fan and have enjoyed his batting and company over the
years. It was disappointing not being able to share this with Nicho but he was a big contributor to our
success.
25

Cameron Trask and Jason Seng were also impressive performers who swung games our way on many
occasions, both of these guys are quality first-graders and we were lucky to have them on board. It would
be remiss of me not to mention the hard work and dedication of club coach Steven Fryer who did a
magnificent job in a very demanding season. Not only was his coaching on the money but his work with
water pumps and the super sopper will be sorely missed. Frysy managed to bring together many different
personalities and create a great team atmosphere and got the reward of an outstanding season. Sorry if I
missed anyone but it really was a collaborative effort to get the results we did this year.
I have always enjoyed my time at Wynnum and this season for me was the highlight. I began as a 14 year
old with dreams of playing for state and country and although I didn’t reach those heights my goal was
always to win premierships. It started well as we won the Lord’s Taverners in my first two years and also
won a second grade final along the way. However a first grade premiership was always the ultimate.
Having achieved that this year is very satisfying and rewarding for the whole group of players but
especially Ryan Broad, Chris Simpson and myself who have now won all three forms of the game at first
grade level. I have seen some fabulous careers start and end in my time and it has been great being able
to observe and contribute to those careers at club level.
The best thing about our club is the camaraderie and you could see it in the faces of former players and
supporters on our 50 th dinner night. There was a real sense of history and achievement and to hear so
many people talk passionately about the club and how far we have come is sobering. I’m proud of what I
have achieved at Wynnum-Manly and have hopefully contributed to the legacy of this great club as have
so many before me.
Regards
Ryan Poole
Third Grade Report 2010-11 – Graham Mapri
A mixed bag of results for Third Grade this season with the team performing extremely well in the two day
matches but failing to win a game in either of the two shorter formats of the game sealed our destiny to
finish sixth and again miss out on semi final representation.
Season 2010/11 whilst celebrating the club’s 50 th Season off the field will forever go down as a season
marred by incessant rain and the floods of January 2011. With no play possible after the Christmas break
until 22 nd January due to the floods, a rhythm was certainly very difficult to achieve for a team filled with
enormous talent and more than enough ability to play in semi finals in coming seasons.
On the player front Harry Tyler, after again injuring his back early in the season, showed what a great
talent he is to win the batting trophy accruing 224 runs at a healthy Third Grade average of 37.33. Harry
may have had some serious back troubles so far in his short cricket career but the application and club
spirit which he has shown to come back and play Third Grade as a batsman will no doubt hold him in
great stead in the coming years as he creates what is sure to be a great career for him at Wynnum Manly
and quite possibly higher honours beckon.
Brett Watts, after starting the season in Fourth Grade proved to be invaluable in the middle to lower order
with the bat. His fielding was at times tireless and off the field he continues to be the greatest asset to any
captain as he relieves the burden of the thousand meaningless tasks which are part of grade cricket.
On the bowling side of things, Brent Chapman spear-headed the attack to take 20 wickets at 18.75 whilst
I bowled him relentlessly despite the fact he had a broken middle toe which required surgery and pinning
at season’s end – an absolutely fantastic season which will see him push up the grades in the near future.
Dave Fryer, after playing in Fourth Grade up to Christmas came back and showed us exactly why he
should have been in Third Grade all along. 13 Wickets at 13.15 with a best of 4/8 against Valley where he
was absolutely unplayable made Dave my most reliable bowler and seeing him dive into the black soot on
the Ian Droney Oval boundary against Wests when they were 8 for 300 plus will remain a vivid memory in
my mind for many years to come.
Leeland Zeller had a good season with both bat and ball ensuring he played a lot of second grade when
the state players were unavailable and Joey Endicott whilst again being plagued by injury showed us just
how good a bowler he still is in his limited appearances.
Steve Fryer filled in early in the season and as per usual dominated with the ball and Justin Poole filled in
late in the season showing us all the style in the world with both bat and ball.
Brendan Smith was an added bonus in his appearances this season, helping to fill in when the state
players were unavailable. His professionalism and dedication is never questioned and he showed with his
bowling that he still holds his head high at this level despite his ageing years.
Finally, Adam McDermott, after starting the season is Sixth Grade came into our side and dominated with
bat, ball and in the field. His second grade debut and “almost” first grade debut were a justifiable reward
for a cricketer who has the world at his feet. His match against Norths in a losing team where he scored
91 and took 6 for 99 on a lightning fast outfield was something to behold.
In summary, although Third Grade did not rise to the heights which I had hoped at the start of the season
a sound season was had by all but much is anticipated for this grade in the very near future.
Fourth Grade Report 2010-11 – David Alderson
Before the season started, the goal for 4 th grade was simply to continue the rise of last season. The
simple motto of back yourself, be competitive and enjoy it was instrumental in how the team played. Of
course it was helped by having an excellent group of players to pick from whom naturally implemented
what we wanted to achieve.
It was, however, a nervy start for the boys with a battering from Redlands in the first round. But, there
were some positive signs out of the game and it served to be a bit of a wakeup call for a few of the guys
to switch on and grab the game at the critical moments.
The first of many washouts was next, missing the entire Gold Coast game and half of the Norths game.
The three week hiatus made all of the guys desperate to take any chance they could with bat and ball.
Mark Turner led the way with a chanceless maiden ton for Wynnum which sparked some stellar form,
being one of the lynchpins in the 4 th grade batting all season. He was well backed up by Matthew Jones
and James Allen who chased the quick runs at the end of the innings. Kevin Davis and Dean Harvey
opened the bowling and put the game beyond doubt with unrelenting accurate bowling.
The next two rounds saw our confidence soar with a win and an outright win against Beenleigh Logan
and Sandgate-Redcliffe. This was particularly promising because all members of the team stood up at
different points. The introduction of Sunny Marghera with an entertaining 80 not out against Sandgate-
Redcliffe was a sign of things to come. Unfortunately, James Allen’s 54 not out against Beenleigh Logan
was to be his last hurrah before falling to a number of injures through the rest of the season.
More wet weather against University, saw a tight game slip by. Sunny Marghera top scored with 51 while
a brief cameo by Tim Gillespie saw him pick up 5 wickets.
The next two months saw a tight T20 loss to Norths and copious amounts of rain, so when we finally got
on the paddock for a Sunday game after Christmas, it was like a new season. The team kicked off again
into a winning way with standout bowling performances by Jon Gallagher, Brodie Rowe, Levi Jamieson
and Steven Fryer. Sunny Marghera and Mark Turner then turned it on with a massive 179 run partnership
to seal the deal.
The next game was critical in our race to the finals and we toiled hard on the first day to restrict Valleys to
a gettable total. Against the best batting line up in the competition, Levi Jamieson was again crucial to
restricting the runs and taking wickets. It was pleasing to see the younger crop stand up with Brodie
Rowe and Harry Day taking wickets. The team battled hard and chased the win at the end which was
great to see.
Having narrowly lost to Valleys the previous week, we knew we had to put it all on the line against tabletopping
Wests. We won an important toss on a slow wicket and again our key bowlers did the job. Jon
Gallagher lead the way to rip through the Wests line up and when Dean LePetit got us off to a flier with
the bat, we were all on a high at the end of the first day. As is always the case, Wests fought back the
next week taking wickets on a regular basis. The constant, however was a superb knock by David Brook,
which saved our season. But it wasn’t until he teamed up with Sean Rebbetts that he found a partner able
to battle out one of the best wins seen in 4 th grade.
Having beaten first and jumped into fourth place, the final hurdle before finals cricket was to demolish
Beenleigh Logan. We did this emphatically, led namely again by our key bowling quartet of Brodie Rowe,
Jon Gallagher, Levi Jamieson and Sean Rebbetts. When the batsmen finished the job, we knew we had
done all that we could to reach Wynnum’s first 4 th grade semi-final in more than a decade.
The points worked out in our favour and we were assigned the task of knocking over Valleys in the semifinal.
As was typical of the season, rain intervened to deny the guys a chance of making the final. While
4 th grade didn’t end up with the premiership, the entire group of players contributed to an excellent
season. It was most pleasing to see the team gel together and enjoy being competitive in all facets of the
game.
Another case of so near and yet so far.
Fifth Grade Report 2010-11 – Jake Boyle
A strong side started the season with high hopes for snaring the Roy Tanner Shield for Wynnum-Manly in
our 50th season. Our early goal was to be on top of the table at the Christmas break before going on to
win the minor premiership.
Our first match of the season was an excellent lesson in the basics of cricket. Redlands made the most of
a number of dropped catches to tally a good score on a placid pitch. Our response was poor on a sticky
wicket the following week with Redlands taking the chances we previously failed to capitalise on.
Unknown to us, the second round washout against Souths 2 would prove pivotal to our season. With the
table being congested due to the interruptions of so much rain and the post Christmas floods, the paltry
48

four points from the match against a side that lost every 2 day match outright were costly.
Round three was an absolute cracker of a match shortened by yet more rain. Norths scored an imposing
235 off their 40 overs while our reply fell a tantalising three runs short in the dark late in the day. Excellent
performances from Brooky (78) and some lusty hitting from Harry Day (40) almost got us our first win of
the season.
Round four was another case of fundamentals letting us down. Sandgate were able to score 226, despite
Matt Purcell’s 6/57, thanks largely to another slew of dropped catches. Our response with the bat was at
best meek before a second innings blitz from Harry Day (73) added a modicum of respect. Four rounds
and zero wins was certainly not helping us towards our goals – neither were the 20-odd dropped catches
so far!
Round five saw a shift in momentum for the team with catches being taken! Harry Day again lead the
charge with 60* for a comfortable five wicket win over Rowdy’s Wests 2 in a one dayer.
Back to back wins continued our momentum shift. The round 6 result was a convincing eight wicket win in
a one dayer against one of the top sides in University. Excellent all round bowling spearheaded by Sean
Rebbetts (4/41) was supported by classy batting from Brooky (40*) and Sully (55*).
Another washout was followed by a frenetic couple of weekends with four T20’s. A T20 flogging at the
hands of Toombul was followed by a bizarre “loss” to Souths where they were awarded the win in a rain
affected match despite being soundly outplayed. Chasing a small total of 114, our 2/57 off seven overs
was calculated to be eight runs short. Duckworth-Lewis had us winning comfortably while the Qld Cricket
calculation has us soundly beaten.
Next up was a hit-and-giggle T20 against Wests 1. Scott Wiffler put down his dodge-ball and went ballistic
scoring 65 off roughly 20 balls. Our total of 153 was plenty as Wests struggled to 9/116. The afternoon’s
match was abandoned thanks again to the damp weather.
The final one-dayer of 2010 was washed out leaving us with the disappointing result of being in the
bottom four at Christmas with a record of 3 wins, 5 losses and 3 washouts.
The post-Christmas floods washed out two rounds as our focus was on more important matters – and our
ground was underwater, seemingly unplayable for possibly the remainder of the season. Some magic
from super-groundsman Graham Mapri had us back in business with four rounds to go. A seemingly
impossible task of reaching the finals was not going to deter us, even with the loss of most of our batting
line-up to higher grades.
Round 1 of the “new season” saw one of the most comprehensive wins possible. A nine wicket, double
bonus point victory over top team University with more than an hour to spare raised our spirits. Dean
Harvey continued his fantastic season with 4/7 while Chamera Perera (46) and Hutch (47*) almost
passing the total without loss. Poddy’s cameo in his “last” game for the club was priceless scoring two
unbeaten singles.
Grudge match of the year against Valley at Ashgrove proved to be a typical war. Dean Harvey’s 6/40
destroyed Valley’s batting lineup earning him his first five wicket haul for the season. Carlin O’Sullivan (45
in his last game for the club) got us off to a cracking start finishing day one two wickets down and only 60
runs behind. A flurry of wickets on an interestingly dry pitch on day two had us in trouble as we limped
across the line for a good win. Valley came out swinging in the second dig scoring a quick 159 setting us
150-odd off 25 overs. With a depleted batting line-up we limped to 6/78 to earn a solid first innings win.
Great to see that the narky aggression and borderline attitude of some of the Valley players was in vain.
Two games to go and a mathematical chance of scraping in.
With a heavy reliance on Dean Harvey’s bowling it was time for the rest of the attack to step up. A
49

alanced performance against Wests on day one saw them bundled out for just 149 on a slow and low
Wynnum deck. In a similar story to the previous round, we finished the day a couple of wickets down with
victory in sight. Gun batsmen Harry Day and Scott Wiffler joined the team on day two with the hope of an
outright victory in the front of our minds. Both batsmen fell for ducks allowing Dean Harvey (82*) and
Steve Wilson (48*) to show them how to score quick runs. 109 runs ahead and plenty of overs at Wests
for the outright. More excellent bowling across the board made light work of Wests with Harry Day making
up for his duck with 4/28. Outright win by an innings and 15 runs and the dream was alive!
Heading into the final round we knew that we had to win well and get a little help from other teams. With
Poddy flying in from Sydney for one more game we had plenty of optimism. With week 1 washed out it
was still possible – but increasingly unlikely. Steve Wilson showed his promise with a composed and
mature 99 dragging us to an imposing 199 off 40 overs. In reply, Valley never got going and were
eventually dismissed for 173 with the old farts Boyle (4/30), Harvey (2/26) and club legend Wayne Broad
(2/32) doing the job.
Results didn’t go our way meaning we finished in fifth place. Had we managed to get a full game against
Souths 2 earlier in the season, and received outright points as all other teams did, we would have finished
the season in second place only a hand full of points off the minor premiership. End result – 7 wins, 5
losses, 5 draws.
A great finish to the season with excellent contributions from everyone who played in the second half.
Youngsters Harry Day, Brenton Williams, Andrew Niven, Steve Wilson, Theo Allen and Todd Grooms all
made significant contributions and have long and illustrious grade careers ahead of them. David Brook
and Dean Harvey lead the older, more established players with Dean Harvey being the best bowler
across the grade by a country mile.
Sixth Grade Report 2010-11 – Ben Crew
The season started with promise with the club investing in a second 6th grade teams for the 10/11
season. I thought that this was a great move for the development of players with more players playing in
a better competition, however it was evident in the week or two before the season started that there were
just not the estimated numbers needed to successfully get the best out of having two teams. In a sign for
the season ahead there were many phone calls from Mappers and me to get a team on the park for round
1.
Round 1: With a bowling heavy side, we bowled 1st toiling hard on a flat wicket to bowl last year’s finalists
Wests out for 207. Bennie leading the attack 3/34, and Williams bowling a superb second spell unlucky to
pick up only 2/32. Our batting performance was sub-par not helped by the pitch conditions which had
changed from a flat wicket to a tacky wet pitch during the week, and rain getting on the wicket during a
rain delay that made batting conditions even worse. Wynnum all bowled out for 124.
Round 2: Was the Wynnum derby with both Wynnum teams facing off, in a week of rain in which we were
lucky to get on. We were sent in to bat in difficult batting conditions, what happened from this point was
an embarrassing display of composure and execution at the crease that saw us knocked over for 68. B.
Raiteri the only one to stand up with a display of controlled hitting to score 30. Taking the ball in hand it
was a good display from the bowlers troubling the batsmen in bowling friendly conditions. Hayes and
Humphries taking two each were the best; the day was called for light with scores equal following
weekend was a wash-out.
Round 3: Saw a two day game reduced to a one day game with the 1st week being washed out. We
batted 1st with Slogrove and Whitmarsh getting us off to a flyer however another middle order collapse
ruined this finishing all out for 147, which would of been worse without a late order fight from J. Raiteri
and Humphries. Whitmarsh 36, Humphries 30. Our bowlers tried hard but at times were just not
consistent enough to build pressure Redlands got the total 5 down with 5 overs to spare. Best bowling
Humphries 2/27.
Round 4: Two day game against Valley [2]. Turning up to the game a below grade standard pitch awaited
us. This game seemed to be a case a slightly different guys same poor batting outcome with us getting
bowled out for 56. We responded well in the field and put pressure on them taking five wickets before
they passed the total, Valley got away a bit after this but we ended up bowling them out for 120. Batting
again Nilas and Slogrove got us off to a good start at 0-50. However, the collapse happened yet again to
go from 0-50 to all out 101. Valleys only had a small 38 runs to get to win out-right and although they got
the total the boys showed great fight to make them work for it taking four wickets in the process. Bennie
and Humphries led the bowling attack with Nilas our best batsman.
58

Round 5: Saw us face Norths in a One day game where Ovenden put on a batting display taking the
game away right from the outset. Norths finished 7/263. In chase we lost a couple of wickets early and
from there we were never in the hunt falling for 94 in pursuit of quick runs. Best Batting Rogers 27.
Round 6: Was a one day game against Valleys [1] in which I did not play so with a new captain and some
new faces we set about trying to get our season back on track. The guys bowled 1st and started strong
picking up some early wickets and were placed well at drinks, some lose delivery's and dropped catches
saw valleys get away from what I thought they should of been restricted to with them finishing 9/187,
Humphries 5/30. It was the best batting display of the season, the boys showed fight specially being down
to just 10 batsmen with Bocking unable to bat due to an injury he sustained in the field. The guys finished
all out 150 with Wilden 42.
Round 7: Wash out
Round 8: Was the first of the T20 matches - vs Valley [2]. With this new format that many had not played
before it was a new challenge, with the guys putting in a solid effort with the bat without anyone going on
with it and taking grasp of the game, all out 101. There was a rain delay which reduced the game to 15
overs, and what would end up coming back to disadvantage us the umpires had no idea how to calculate
the correct re-adjusted total instead plucking a number out of the air. Besides this it was an outstanding
bowling display from all the bowlers to restrict valley's to 82 with Bennie 4/10 and J. Raiteri 3/16 the best
with the ball giving us our first win of the season,
Round 9: Washed out
Round 10: Washed out
Round 11: Washed out
Round 12: Washed out
Round 13: Washed out
Round 14: After the post Christmas floods and the missed cricket it was good to get back out and play
some cricket. The Break obviously had done everyone good with us posting our best total of the season
170, Wiffler 58, Humphries 54. Our bowling display was ok without being great, unfortunately just not
being able to get on-top. We eventually let a great chance to get the win slip through our fingers, Bennie
4/47 and Humphries 5/39 were again the best. Everyone was disappointed but we still had 24 overs left in
the day, it was here that some great fighting spirit was displayed with Wilden 35 and C. Anthony 72 n.o.
dispatching the bowling to all corners to leave us 4/144 at the end of the match.
Round 15: It was a two day game against Toombul on a belter at Wynnum. The guys bowled well in hot
zapping conditions, the umpires however failed to give crucial decision in the innings that enabled them to
get away and post 251. Hayes was the best with 5/43. Batting, we were again given a raw deal with the
umpires triggering both opening batsmen after not giving an L.B.W. through-out there entire innings.
Despite being 3/19 at one stage the guys re-grouped and put in a good batting display reaching 198.
Humphries 47, Troy 32, Bowl 30. 17 overs at the end of the day saw us dominate play having Toombul on
the rocks at 7/63. J. Raiteri 4/15.
Round 16: Saw us face University [1] in a two day game. Bowing first, the game was well positioned until
their number 6 hit 100 off what seemed no more than 60 balls to take the game right away setting them
up with a total of 294. Humphries 4/76, Charlton 3/39. Our batting started well with Bowtell 32 and
Hebblewhite 27 getting us off to a good start, continued starts by most batsmen were good but without
anyone going on with it we were never in the hunt falling well short on 176. We had 23 overs at them at
the end of the day and for the third round in a row these little periods at the end of games we dominated
yet again showing true spirit as a team to have University 6/75 at play’s end J. Raiteri 3/17.
Round 17: The last game of the season saw the first week washed out so it ended up being a one day
game against Valley [1]. In a crazy week we could only find 10 guys which included two juniors + two
guys that had not played during the season. I ended up winning the toss and batting first, getting off to a
terrible start at 1-0. We then lost another wicket early and things did not look good. From here however
59

there was no looking back with Johnson 64, Bowtell 54 n.o. and Crew 41 taking to the attack to post the
best total of the year 6/209. Our bowling and fielding was a tight display of execution with Valley never in
the hunt being rolled for 112. Allen 5/29. Mention must also go to Bowtell who worked during the night
then had to drive through N.S.W's to get to the game to help out because we were short.
It was an interesting season that got off very slowly prior to Christmas with the bowling performances in
most matches being strong, but with the lack of numbers for most matches the batting definitely was a
weak point. However post Christmas I felt that the team was much more cohesive and put in great
performances and could have easily taken three wins from four with better execution at times. David
Humphries was a great help through-out the season in a number of areas and could have easily been
classed as my co-captain. Although the numbers were not there this season to keep both teams strong
and get the best out of the two teams, the concept is a good one and if numbers permit getting more guys
playing grade I feel is beneficial.
Warehouse Report 2010-11 – Gareth Williams
The major positive to come out of last season was the regular core of blokes able to (mostly) stay
together in the team. For the most part we had 10 or so guys who all got on well and created an
enjoyable team atmosphere. We still had our problems with numbers, especially late in the season, but
having these guys around made it somewhat easier. Seeing most of the guys make Thursday training
and hearing the positive comments from other players about Warehouses attendance was positive and
meant we were able to form the team spirit. Of course, our attendance (particularly Dale's and Nathan's)
at social events helped. Sadly Dale will be missed this season after returning to Melbourne. Waters, Lutzy
and the bar takings will miss him most.
I would like to thank the club for the well wishes and black arm tribute after my Father passed away in
October, it meant a lot to myself and my family.
In terms of results it was a disappointing season finishing last. Our bowling was the shining light this year
with the bowlers giving our team the best chances. Warehouse is a difficult league to bowl in, you can
send down an over of perfect deliveries only to have each of them hacked over cow corner. But the guys
put in and gave it their best. Out batting was a letdown, with all of us under performing. We need to learn
to protect our wickets more, grind out runs and force the bowlers to get us out, rather than being
dismissed easily.
I'm hoping next season will bring most of the guys back to the club and we can build on what came about
last season and also put some good performances on the board.
