Statistical Summary
2006—2011
These statistics focus on the most
common intakes and outcomes for
cats and dogs. The Shelter deals with
other animals (such as rabbits, ferrets,
birds, wild animals, etc.) as well as
dead animals (such as the dachshund
found hung in July of this year), but
these figures were not included in
these graphs to simplify the statistics.
Detailed statistics may be requested
by contacting the shelter.
Belle, the official Shelter dog
Dear Friends,
Even though the economy seems to be struggling, adoptions
have remained strong at the shelter. I’m not sure if it’s because
we need more comfort in our lives at this time or we are doing a
great thing when we adopt from an Animal Shelter or Humane
Society. Hopefully it’s a combination of both.
June was an exceptional month for our felines at the shelter. We
reduced adoption fees due to June being National Adopt-A-Cat
Month and it was a huge success! Sixty two cats and kittens
found wonderful new homes.
The balance of the adoption fees was used from our donation
and memorial fund.
Speaking of our kitties, plans are under way to remodel the cat
room. New kennels are in production at this time and will be
installed soon. They are larger and have tempered glass fronts so
the kitties will be easier to view. Watch for our open house when
it’s complete!
Be sure and check our events calendar in this issue and mark
your calendars as we have a lot of fun things happening late
summer and early fall.
All things good,
Cat Adoption Month Celebrations
June is designated Cat
Adoption Month because it
is the month when most
felines are relinquished to
shelters across the nation.
Cat Adoption Month was
a success this year with 62
cats and kittens finding new
homes. An additional 27
cats/kittens were saved by
various Rescue agencies.
Festivities for June included
Did you know the former Shelter was built on an old landfill?
Attitudes toward shelters have improved over the
years. They are no longer called The Pound and are being
built within City limits with public dog parks. Animal
Shelters across the United States provide a safe and secure
environment for stray and homeless pets until they can find
a more permanent home.
Grief is a reaction to a
major loss.
Pets can grieve too. Those
who have experienced the
loss of a pet know how diffi-
cult the sorrow can be. That
pet may have a companion
that is grieving too. Public
Libraries usually have several
books to help deal with a
grieving pet. For most of us,
it takes TIME.
Rose has been busy making
the shelter animals. She
found a recipe made with
peanut butter and yogurt for
the dogs that she named
‘Pupcicles’.
Pupcicles made with yogurt,
peanut butter and a dog treat.
For the cats, she
found a free toy
made from paper
towel rolls. Cut the old paper
towel rolls into small
segments and you can
entertain several cats and
kittens with an item that
would have ended up in the
trash.
If you have a kennel enrichment
project or idea that would benefit
the shelter animals, contact Rose
at rose.base@salina.org.
Did you know…
Only about 14% of dogs and 4% of cats nationwide who end up in
shelters are returned to their rightful owners. Micro chips are an inexpensive
tool that help reunite lost pets to their families. If you have a
micro chip, remember to update your address at HomeAgainID
when you move (from HomeAgainID.com). The shelter will micro chip
and register your pet for $20. Call the shelter for information.
Trivia
Many birds, including
doves, parakeets, and
lovebirds, enjoy living in
pairs for companionship.
Fleas have changed
history. As carriers of the
bubonic plague, fleas
were responsible for
killing 1/3 of the
population of Europe in
the 14th century.
The female house mouse
has 5 to 10 litters per
year. Litters of 5 to 6
young are born 19 to 21
days after mating occurs.
These offspring are
sexually mature at 6 to
10 weeks of age.
Pets are easily susceptible to heatstroke. Heatstroke happens when heat gain
exceeds the body's ability to dissipate heat. High temperatures cause chemical
reactions that break down body cells which lead to dehydration and blood thicken-
Heatstroke Prevention For Your Pets
Symptoms of heatstroke in pets include rapid, frantic panting, wide eyes, thick sa-
Use common sense during hot days. Give outdoor pets plenty of fresh water in a
non-tipping bowl frequently throughout the day. And if it’s too hot for you to be
