I am responsible for the administrative supervision and guidance of all core departmental
programs including the University of California, Davis Medical Center Family Practice
Residency Program, Predoctoral Education Program, family practice clinical services, and
faculty research activities, as well as the UCD Network of Affiliated Family Practice
Residency Training Programs (consisting of seven affiliated residency programs located in
Northern and Central California), and the Family Nurse Practitioner/Physician Assistant
Training Program (a two-year program with two primary training sites in Sacramento and
Fresno).
I am now in my second five-year term as Chairperson. As a Chair, I have devoted my efforts
to meeting a number of challenges facing our Department. The stability and maturity of the
faculty is currently at the highest point in the Department’s history. Of the 14 new faculty I
recruited, 40% are women and 30% are underrepresented minorities. As a department, we
continue to maintain a long-standing national reputation for excellence in the areas of
residency, predoctoral and family nurse practitioner/physician assistant education. Our
outpatient and clinical services maintain a balance of quality and volume in a highly
competitive managed care environment. In 2002 and 2003, we have been consistently ranked
as the leading hospital-based outpatient clinic of the medical center according to independent
monthly performance/efficiency standards. With an operating budget of $7.6 million and over
$2.5 million in reserves, the Department is fiscally sound when compared not only with other
departments in the UCD School of Medicine, but with Departments of Family Medicine
nationwide.
HONORS AND AWARDS
1979 to Present The "Klea D. Bertakis Award" is given annually at the Western
Student Medical Research Forum (WSMRF). The WSMRF
established this award for "Excellence in Research" to
acknowledge my contributions in organizing this forum as a

medical student and serving as the Faculty Advisor from 1980-
1992. The Western Student Medical Research Forum includes
students from the sixteen western medical schools; the meeting is
held in conjunction with the joint annual meetings of the
Western Section, American Federation for Clinical Research,
the Western Society for Clinical Investigation, Western Society
for Pediatric Research, and Western Section, Society for
Investigative Dermatology.
1993 Society of Teachers of Family Medicine "Presidential Award"
2000 Curtis G. Hames Research Award in Family Medicine.
This national award is made by the Society of Teachers of
Family Medicine, the American Academy of Family Physicians,
and the North American Primary Care Research Group. It is
given to an individual who “has contributed in a major,
outstanding manner to the development of family medicine
research” and “whose career over the years exemplifies
dedication to research in family medicine.” I was the youngest
individual ever selected to receive this lifetime achievement
award.
2001-2002 Charter Fellow in the F. Marian Bishop Charitable Trust
Fellowship Program. This Program is designed to develop senior
academic family physicians to pursue careers as a dean or higher
level administrator in academic health centers.
2001-2002 American Council on Education (ACE) Fellow. This program is
devoted “to institutional development and to creating a diverse
pool of leaders who are capable of achieving and maintaining
excellence and equity in higher education.” My mentor was
Michael V. Drake, Vice President for Health Affairs for the
University of California System. I worked in his office and
assisted in drafting a new Memorandum of Understanding
between the University of California and the State Legislature
regarding the training of primary care physicians.
2004-2005 Dean’s Excellence in Mentoring Award. Nomination is “by
junior faculty for the special role you have played in their
academic development and help provided them in attaining their
full academic potential.”
