AHA Issues New Statement
On Diet and Heart Disease
An eight-point program of dietary control
was recommended to the American people by
the American Heart Association as a possible
means of lowering the risk of heart attacks.
The Association emphasized that these dietary
principles should be applied early in life,
and that sound food habits should be made
"a family affair." The AHA urged Americans to
adhere consistently to these dietary patterns,
and to seek professional advice in order to
avoid nutritional deficiency when changing
their diets.
The revised statement, authorized by the
AHA Board of Directors, differs from an older
statement in calling for "substitution wherever
possible" rather than "reasonable substitution"
of polyunsaturated for saturated fats, and in
recommending—for the first time—reduced intake
of cholesterol-rich foods.
The recommendations of the previous statement,
moreover, were held to apply principally
to groups with a particularly high risk of heart
attacks and strokes. The new statement extends
these recommendations to the general public
on the basis of scientific evidence that appropriate
dietary control, beginning in childhood,
"may contribute to the retardation of
coronary heart disease."
Copies of the complete statement may be
obtained from local Heart Associations.
