CALLING ALL ACTORS, SINGERS, MUSICIANS & WANNABES
TO TAKE PART IN THE ORIGINAL
BRUTHEN COMMUNITY PLAY: ONE SMALL TOWN
This year the Bruthen Blues & Arts Festival committee is working to
and Eva Grunden will help to create this theatre piece that takes
participants and audiences on a journey of Bruthen – the township,
environment and people. This journey will take place three times
during the festival program, along the picturesque Rail Trail.
A professional musical composer, Padma Newsome will also be
working with the community to write original music and songs for
the play, and theatre producer and visual artist Rachel Joy (of
Snuff Puppets fame!) will also be working on the project.
East Gippsland Aboriginal Arts Corporation
East Gippsland Aboriginal Arts Corporation (EGAAC)
have hit the ground running after a very successful
2007.
Over the past year sales and visitors (local, national
and international) have increased dramatically. We
are being recognized as a place to visit not only by
tourists to the area but also - very pleasingly - the
local community, who then recommend a visit to their
guests and friends with pride of what our region has to
offer.
At last East Gippsland Indigenous Artists are being
recognized for their culture and beautiful artworks echoing both past and present, in both
traditional and contemporary genres.
Collectors both domestic and overseas are recognizing the value of purchasing these unique
pieces, as well as the casual and first time visitor. All are seeking to learn more about Aboriginal
Culture, and leave the gallery with a little more insight, and a fabulous piece of unique art they
have proudly purchased.
At present we are working on a website and hope to launch this in the coming months. We also
have external exhibitions programmed:
Profile: Mamatoto
Formed in 1995 Mamatoto is a four piece acoustic & A’capella harmony group based in
Bairnsdale who recently performed ( to wild acclaim) as support act to Kate Ceberano at
the Buchan Caves Reserve for the Great Victorian Bike Ride 2007.
The word ‘Mamatoto’ is Swahili and means, ‘Mother and Child’. The group has undergone
a recent change in line-up and comprises of Cyndie Bignell (Vocals, percussion), Sharyn
Dickeson (Vocals, percussion) and Philip Cappadona (Acoustic Guitar and Vocals) & Julie
Willersdorf (Acoustic Guitar and Vocals).
A professional outfit with an easy sound, Mamatoto is a unique blend of original and
contemporary music, performing what has been described as “inspirational three part
harmonies”. Mamatoto is a versatile group with eclectic music styles that include, celtic,
african, traditional, blues, folk and A’capella.
As singer songwriters, band members draw inspiration from the world around them,
each song telling its own unique story that speaks from the heart. These songs are the
cornerstone of performances, blending lyricism with harmony.
Mamatoto has performed widely since forming in 1995. These performances have included
festivals, exhibition openings, fundraising events, cafes, pubs, restaurants and private
functions.
