The <strong>Clan</strong> Tartan.<br />

The late Captain Hugh Antrobus was a zealous enquirer<br />

along certain lines <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Clau history, and was an enthusiastic<br />

advocate <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Clan</strong>'s right to full status among <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r<br />

Scottish clans. He was particularly interested in <strong>the</strong> history <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> tartan and in <strong>the</strong> question wliy this did not become <strong>the</strong><br />

regimental tartan <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Black Watch when that regiment was<br />

first embodied under <strong>the</strong> command <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Earl <strong>of</strong> Crawford-<br />

<strong>Lindsay</strong>. From among <strong>the</strong> notes which he sent to <strong>the</strong> editor<br />

he would no doubt have desired that <strong>the</strong> following extracts<br />

should be at <strong>the</strong> service <strong>of</strong> anyone who may desire to continue<br />

<strong>the</strong> enquiry :<br />

Extract from a Letter by Captain J. STEWART,<br />

The Black Watch.<br />

"Capt. Antrobus may be endeavouring to tiud out whe<strong>the</strong>r<br />

Lord Crawfurd had anythin"^ to do with <strong>the</strong> selection <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Black Watch tartan, and if so I can give a definite opinion.<br />

"First <strong>of</strong> all, Stewart <strong>of</strong> Garth is in my opinion <strong>the</strong> only<br />

thoroughly reliable historian <strong>of</strong> all pertaining to <strong>the</strong> domestic<br />

and military conditions <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Highlands during <strong>the</strong> 18th and<br />

and early part <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> 19th centuries. He tuok a very great<br />

interest in <strong>the</strong>se subjects and especially in our Regiment, in<br />

which he served for a considerable period, and from <strong>the</strong> older<br />

<strong>of</strong>lBcers and men <strong>of</strong> which he must have gained a unique know-<br />

ledge <strong>of</strong> its birth and early history. I <strong>the</strong>refore take his<br />

statements as being absolutely correct unless disproved by<br />

original documents; and so have no reason to doubt that his
