lord <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> lands <strong>of</strong> Glenesk, <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Diocese <strong>of</strong> St<br />

Andrews ; and to our beloved daughter in Ciaist, <strong>the</strong><br />

noble woman Elizabeth, born <strong>of</strong> our dearest son in<br />

Christ, Eobert, <strong>the</strong> illustrious King <strong>of</strong> <strong>Scotland</strong>, greet-<br />

ing, etc.<br />

The careful liberality <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Apostolic See, temper-<br />

ing sometimes <strong>the</strong> severity <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> law with gentleness,<br />

permits, <strong>of</strong> its indulgence, that which <strong>the</strong> authority <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> law forbids ; especially when it perceives that to<br />

do so is wholesome and expedient before God, <strong>the</strong><br />

situation <strong>of</strong> persons and <strong>the</strong> quality <strong>of</strong> places and times<br />

considered.<br />

Truly, a petition on your part lately put before us<br />

bore, that ye desire mutually to be united in marriage ;<br />

but, because at <strong>the</strong> same time ye are connected in <strong>the</strong><br />

fourth degree <strong>of</strong> consanguinity, ye cannot fulfill such<br />

your desire without having obtained <strong>the</strong> apostolic<br />

dispensation <strong>the</strong>reupon ;<br />

wherefore it has been humbly<br />

entreated <strong>of</strong> us on your part, that we should condescend<br />

<strong>of</strong> our apostolic indulgence to furnish you with <strong>the</strong><br />

favour <strong>of</strong> a suitable dispensation.<br />

We, <strong>the</strong>n,—in consideration also <strong>of</strong> our dearest son<br />

in Christ, Robert, <strong>the</strong> illustrious King <strong>of</strong> <strong>Scotland</strong>,<br />

humbly praying us to <strong>the</strong> same purpose—have given<br />

heed to such supplications, that <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> King himself<br />

and yours ; and, in order that ye may be able freely<br />

and lawfully to contract a marriage with each o<strong>the</strong>r,<br />

and, after it shall have been contracted, to abide<br />

<strong>the</strong>rein, notwithstanding <strong>the</strong> impediment which arises
