continued to contract new debts to John, to his<br />

bro<strong>the</strong>r Andrew, and to o<strong>the</strong>rs. Most <strong>of</strong> tliose not<br />

directly due to himself Mr John bought up, so that<br />

in 1608, with unpaid interest, his bro<strong>the</strong>r's indebtedness<br />

to him amounted to over £22,000. He now<br />

obtained a new charter, which seems to have given<br />

him absolute possession <strong>of</strong> Kiuloch and a reversion<br />

over Dowhill, <strong>the</strong> laird retaining <strong>the</strong> right to redeem<br />

<strong>the</strong> latter within seven years. From that time forth<br />

Mr John was designated "<strong>of</strong> Kinloch"; but, as<br />

Dowhill was never redeemed, his heirs being in posses-<br />

sion reverted to <strong>the</strong> old designation.*<br />

Mr John's first wife was Christian Schaw, a daughter<br />

<strong>of</strong> John Schaw <strong>of</strong> Lethangie, to marry whom he was<br />

contracted 19th May IGOl.f<br />

Between 1609 and 1611 Mr John married Jean<br />

Ramsay, daughter <strong>of</strong> George Ramsay <strong>of</strong> Banff.|<br />

and widow <strong>of</strong> Mr James Nicolson, Bishop <strong>of</strong> Dunkeld.<br />

Kinloch was settled on her son William in property,<br />

while <strong>the</strong> superiority remained to <strong>the</strong> eldest son<br />

by <strong>the</strong> first marriage. § In 1613 Mr John was<br />

appointed a Justice <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Peace for Perthshire, an<br />

appointment that was renewed in 1623.|| He died<br />

November 1629.11<br />
