<strong>of</strong> Marche last bipast to <strong>the</strong> ground <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> suidis com-<br />

plenaris landis and steding <strong>of</strong> Cr<strong>of</strong>tgarie and Brago,<br />

and siclike to thair dwelling houssis <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> saniyn ;<br />

and<br />

thair with foir hammeris, maisterfullie, wranguslie, and<br />

violentlie brak Up <strong>the</strong> durris <strong>of</strong> thair saidis dwelling<br />

houssis," and took away <strong>the</strong> whole inside goods and<br />

gear, with 4 horses, 10 oxen and 4 kye, with a stack<br />

<strong>of</strong> oats unthreshed and one already threshed, as well as<br />

three stacks <strong>of</strong> oats and one <strong>of</strong> b out <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> barn-<br />

yard, . . . broke <strong>the</strong> bottom out <strong>of</strong> a great ark full <strong>of</strong><br />

meal and "skaillit" <strong>the</strong> meal into a burn; broke<br />

up kists standing within <strong>the</strong>ir chamber and<br />

" spuilyeit " <strong>the</strong>ir whole gold and silver out <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

same, and so brought <strong>the</strong>m to extreme poverty. They<br />

came a second time and cast down <strong>the</strong> walls <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

house to <strong>the</strong> ground, and ejected <strong>the</strong> coraplainers, who<br />

aver that <strong>the</strong>y had not been lawfully warned to remove<br />

from <strong>the</strong> said lands. The parties having been summoned<br />

before <strong>the</strong> Privy Council some <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>m appeared<br />

but <strong>Lindsay</strong> <strong>of</strong> Dowhill, Patrick, his bro<strong>the</strong>r, and John<br />

Tyrie did not. The case was remitted to <strong>the</strong> Judge<br />

Ordinar, but we are left in ignorance as to how it<br />

ended.*<br />

This laird married Jonet, daughter <strong>of</strong> James Ross<br />

<strong>of</strong> Craigton, and Marjory Stewart, his wife. Marjory<br />

Stewart, <strong>the</strong> mo<strong>the</strong>r, as already stated, married as his<br />

second wife, John <strong>Lindsay</strong>, <strong>the</strong> sixth laird <strong>of</strong> Dowhill<br />
