Inquiry brings to light nothing that definitely con-<br />
nects Sir William <strong>Lindsay</strong> <strong>of</strong> Rossie with <strong>the</strong> <strong>Lindsay</strong>s<br />
<strong>of</strong> Dowhill ; nei<strong>the</strong>r, however, does it discover anything<br />
opposed to <strong>the</strong> view that he was progenitor <strong>of</strong> that<br />

St Stephen and St Lawrence for <strong>the</strong> .souls <strong>of</strong> his deceased fa<strong>the</strong>r, William<br />
<strong>Lindsay</strong>, and <strong>of</strong> Iiis mo<strong>the</strong>r, Lady Matilda Stewait (Reg. Epis. Glas.,<br />

that he was not <strong>the</strong> first born, because <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> uidikelihood <strong>of</strong> an eldest<br />
son being given to <strong>the</strong> priesthood witli its oljligation <strong>of</strong> celil)acy.<br />
